POULTRY INDUSTRY
YOUNG BIRD SHOW. A FINE DISPLAY. The second annual young bird show run by the Hawera Poultry Society was held yesterday at the Winter Show poultry pens, in the presence of a fair number of visitors. The total entry was considered very satisfactory, 165 all told, as compared with 116 last year. The work was distinctly of an educational character and intended as a feeder to the main show. In this it had been found that the result was distinctly good. The entries include 38 white and 14 brown Leghorns, 16 Orpingtons, 19 Minorca, 13 Rhode Island Reds, 11 bantams, 3 white Wyandottes, 15 ducks, 1 white Plymouth Rock, 6 Andalusians, and 6 Sussex, with the balance in the children’s classes. A fine points prize, in the form of a handsome silver-mounted oak tray, has
been given by Mr. A. B. Gardener in place of the cup given by him and won outright last year. Special interest centred in tlie children’s classes, which brought out many excellent specimens of poultry; a marked' feature being the bantams.
Tlie judges were Mr J. B. Wilson, for light birds, and Mr Don .Stewart, heavy breeds, and both were very pleased with the display and complimented the society and the exhibitors. •Mr A. Hopkins is honorary secretary, and his good organising work ensured that everything went with a good swing and without a hitch. The penning of the birds, as always with the club and its competent officials, was very good and reflected credit on all. ' The show was open afternoon and evening and there were fair attendances of the public, taking a keen interest in the exhibits. Discussing the heavy breeds, the judge, Mr. D. Stewart, said that the orpingtons were a nice lot, the winning pullet being of a beautiful type, with bright eye and head and feathers, typical of the breed. The cockerel, though not quite so outstanding, was easily the best and true to type. There was, however, in sonic cases a little too much “cushion.” The Rhode Island Reds were excellent, both in open and utility sections and the pullet that won the open was of beautiful type also. The cockerel was a nice bird, true to type, and of good colour, winning without trouble in its class, and should be heard of later at bigger shows. The utility birds were also of very nice type and sound in colour. The first and second were hard to separate. There was a capital entry in the Light Sussex, well grown and stylish, birds, good in type and sound in colour. Mr. Wilson was very pleased with the general quality of the light breeds. He .said the winning Brown Leghorn pullet was a nice bird, but not too well grown, but easily won in her class. Two or three good birds had to "be passed over because of white feathers in the wings, a grave fault in the female birds. The cockerel was good, a true Leghorn and sound in colour. The winner should he heard of again in later shows.
The bantams were a nice lot, the rose comb birds very even and good. The White Leghorns provoked close competition because of the evenness of the quality and winners ran very close to one another. The Minorcas were hardly so good, but the winners stood put firmly. Generally, birds were inclined toi be coarse. The ducks were very nice birds and made a good display. The judges were enthusiastic at the good show made by the children and commended’ them heartily for the interest taken and the excellent birds shown. PRIZE LIST.
