A Frews message from Paris reports the death of Jacques Schneider, the donor of the. spaplane cup. Mr. and Mrs. Phil. Nathan, of Wellington, are at present on a- short visit to Hawera and are guests at the Central Hotel. Colonel C. Guy Powles, of Wellington, went south this morning by train to Wellington, after a short visit to Hawera and district. Mr. L. S. Hulbert, who was injured in a football match last Saturday, is progressing well at the Hawera hospital. On inquiry this morning it was ascertained that he is very bright and hopes to' be about again shortly. The many friends of Mr and Mrs John Kelly, of Te Iloti-, will bp pleased to learn that their little daughter Patty who underwent an operation in a private hospital, is doing a® wel 1 as can be expected. The Rev. D. C. Bates, formerly director of the Meteorological Office, of New Zealand, has, at the invitation; of the Bishop of Christchurch, taken temporary charge of the parish of Ashburton. The vacancy was caused by the death of the Eev. Franldyn Wiseman. Having been three weeks in a private hospital, where he underwent an operation. Mr. A. H. Hatfield, insurance manager of the Farmers’ Co-op. Society, left by mail train this morning on a health-recruiting trip to Wellington. The effieient service given by Mr. P. W. Lamb, secretary and manager of the Hawera. Electric Company, was very cordially recognised by shareholders at the annual meeting of the company yesterday, and many speakers referred to his untiring and; very effective work on behalf of the company. A special bonus is to be paid to the secretary and his staff as a slight recognition of good work throughout the company’s operations. The valuable pioneering work done at the outset of the operations of the Hawera Electric Company by Mr. Elliott Bartan, formerly a prominent citizen of Hawera, was very happily referee! to by Colonel Powles at the annual meeting of the company yesterday. He spoke of the far vision of the future shown by Mr. Barton . in visualising the possibilities of electricity in this district, and) paid a tribute to his energy and enthusiasm and to his selection of the site for the power-house. On his motion a. vote of appreciation was passed, and a. letter is to lie sent to him conveying the best wishes of,all shareholders.
