SURFACEMAN’S FATAL INJURIES. IBY TELEGRAPH—PRESS iSSOCIAI iON . i INVERCARGILL, April 29. An inquest was held on Saturday touching the death of Frederick Ross, a railway surfaceman, ‘who died alter admission to the Southland Hospital on April 21 from .Morton Mains, where he was involved in an accident in vvihicii a railway jigger was wrecked by the engine of a train en route from Fdendale to Invercargill. Medical evidence showed that deceased had an extensive fracture at the base of the skull.
James Staunton, driver of the train, said the train was running 3() minutes late when it came into N Morton Mains and deceased might have thought it had already passed. It was quite possible that deceased was moving the trolley from the main line on to the panting rails when it was struck. ■ The Coroner returned a verdict that deceased died from injuries received at Morton Mains railway station through the trolley he was removirig from the line on to the parking line being struck by a passing train. RUN DOWN BY CAR. WANGANUI, April 27. Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Cooper were run into by a car, said to have been driven by F. A. F. Symes, of Seafiekl, on the Spring vale road to-night. .Both were taken to the hospital, their condition being'serious. Mr. Cooper was operated on upon admission. They have six children, ranging in age from 18 months to 13 years. INFANT FATALLY SCALDED. INVERCARGILL, April 28. An -inquiry was held on Saturday concerning the death of June Faulkner, an 18-month-old infant, who died on April 21 at the Southland Hospital nearly a month after being admitted .from Tuatapere. She had been badly scalded when a kettle of boiling water was overturned. The coroner returned a verdict that death was due to shock, the result of scalds. CAR FALLS OVER BANK. TAIHAPE, April 28. At an early hour this morning a car containing two young men named Walter Warren and 1 Robert Boyd ran over a bank on the road at Bennett’s Siding, north of Taihape, when the car skidded on some shingle. Boyd was pinned beneath the car, but Warren, with a broken jaw, a broken nose and his eye gouged out, struggld to the farmhouse of Mr. C. H. Baker for assistance. Both men were conveyed to the hospital by Dr. Hay. Warren’s condition is reported to he serious, while Boyd suffered injuries to his back. The car fell about 30 feet. ■ OLD MAN INJURED. PALMERSTON N., April 30. While walking between Karere and Palmerston North on Saturday evening, W. Missen (aged 70) was knocked down by a car and run over, sustaining broken legs, severe abrasions and scalp wounds. He was admitted ,to hospital suffering severely from injuries and shock. MOTOR FATALITY AT WELLINGTON. WELLINGTON, April 30. As'the result of a collision between a motor-cycle driven by W. Pnynter and two pedestrians in Adelaide Road last night, Miss E. Phillips, of 273 Hanson Street, was killed almost instantly. Payhter suffered abrasions and shock. Two other young women who were knocked down did not suffer severe injury and were able to proceed homo.
