ENTERTAINMENTS.

OPERA HOUSE, TO-NIGHT. “THE THIRTEENTH JUROR” “The Thirteenth Juror,”- a Universal Jewel production, with an allfeatured cast headed by Francis X. Bushman and Anna Q. Nilsson, opens at the Opera House to-night. The picture is a screen version of Henry Irving Hodge’s celebrated stage play, “Counsel for the Defence,”- and is said to be the greatest drama of *ts< kind ever screened, it deals with the efforts of a famous criminal attorney* to avoid the consequences of his own crime by defending an innocent man. In the opinion of many, the stage play did more good in the eliminating of useless red tape in the law courts throughout the land than any other single factor, and it is believed that the film version will be an even more powerful plea for swifter justice. “The Thirteenth Juror”, affords Bushman his finest .vehicle since “Ben Hur,” and he is said to reach emotional and dramatic heights in this picture that even outshine that epic of the screen. There is a full supporting programme. The programme will be finally screened at the Grand Theatre to-morrow evening. OPERA HOUSE. COMMENCING WEDNESDAY NEXT ENGDAND’S STORY OF THE FAMOUS RETREAT. “Mons,” which opens a three-night season on Wednesday next, at the Opera House, is the film story of that immortal retreat, more splendid than any victory. Few, alas, survive of those who actually fought through it, but they were our kinsmen and their deeds must hold us still. Passing from the “Scrap of Paper” which brought us into the war, we see on the screen the swift and mysterious departure of the B.E.F. for France and the French welcome, and then the first shots of the campaign. Most of us can recall with what awful intensity in those opening days we here watched the newspapers for the black line of the German advance over Belgium and the Rhine country of France. For instance, Landrecies was the 3rd Coldstreams’ baptism of _ fire. _ They were just turning into billets in the evening when—to their the Germans, whom they at first supposed to be French, came marching in from the forest- of _ Mormal. In a ferocious “scrap” which cost the Goldstreamers and Grenadiers 200 casualties and the Germans 700, the enemy was driven hack, and before morning Landrecies was quiet again. There will be a special matinee for the school children on Thursday, commencing at 3.15 p.m. The box plan for the season is now open at Miss Blake’s sweet shop.
