NOTES BY “GUIDER.” The Dominion Secretary, Miss D. E. Gillett, lias resigned, as she is leaving Auckland. Miss M. Wakefield has been appointed general secretary at headquarters in hor place. Miss M. Newoombe, Provincial Commissioner for Wellington, who lias recently recovered from an illness, is spending a holiday at Rotorua. Miss Zelma Curran, Ist Hawera pack, has passed the necessary examination for her warrant as Tawny Owl. Mrs. R. B. Foord, Eltham Company, lias been advised by the head of camping that she lias completed the tests for her camper’s license. There was a large attendance of Guides, Rangers and' Guiders at -the Anzao Day parade. The appearance and marching of the party was very favourably commented on. RANGER BIRTHDAY. Last Monday the . Hawera Rangers completed the first year of their existence, and accordingly celebrated the occasion by holding a- birthday party in their den. There was a large attendance of Rangers, and the guests were Mrs. E. A. Pacey, president local association, Mrs. A. E. Morris, district secretary, Miss D. Brit land, late cap tain, Mrs. H. G. Whitehead, and Mrs. John Houston, acting provincial commissioner. The guests were received with a iliaka of welcome given by Mi sses P. Bell, M. Quin, Z. Curran, and O. Harding. This • was followed by the birthday feast- of hot saveloys with potatoes baked in tlieir jackets and a plentiful supply of bread and butter, with plum pudding and cream to follow.
During the evening campfire songs were sung round an imitation campfire, Patrol Leader Mary Quin told a story of King Arthur’s Knights, and Patrol Leader D. Clement- recited.
Ball games and country dancing proved a good way of working off superfluous energy. This was followed by an enrolment and presentation of badges and service stars. Guide Mary Gulliver was enrolled as Ranger by the Commissioner. The Service Stars were presented- by Mrs. Pacey. The Commissioner then .introduced Mrs. Whitehead to the company, she having consented to- act- as their captain. A telegram from Mrs. L. C. H. Barbour, the first Ranger Captain, was read' conveying her birthday greetings and love to the company. The Commissioner congratulated- the company on its .rears progress, and said they had stuck together well through- many ups and' downs, and that the coming year was full of promise and the Rangers would become a power for good in their town. The oresident said she wished, to express her appreciation of the work done by Miss P. Bell. Lieutenant Tuarua -Section, who had done splendid work for the company during the year. The commissioner endorsed her remarks. Coffee and the birthday cake with its one candle were served at nine o’clock, the cake being cut by the president, who wished the company many happy returns of the day and much success in Guiding. Greetings' were received from Mrs. F. S. Hodson. and the Opunako Rangers. The latter were to have been guests of the company, but- _ the absence of their captain -and lieutenant together with transport difficulty prevented them from coming down. The' singing of “Taps” brought a happy birthday party to a close.
