EXHAUST DANGERS.

DONT’S FOR. DRIVERS AND OTHERS. The following iunts may be offered as a means of avoiding ill-effects from tbe breathing of exhaust fumes: Do not run an engine in a closed garage. Do not run an engine with the exhaust pipe lacing -what is in effect a cul-de-sac. Do not run an engine for more than a minute or so in a public garage, unless there is effective ventilation. Do not drive backwards into a private : garage; the exhaust fumes at the time and, later, when the. car is being warmed up preparatory to driving out, may prove very dangerous. It is safer to drive in forwards, so that tbe exhaust gas goes out at the open end of the garage.

Do not sit' in a car or on a motorcycle with the engine running in a confided space, as in a traffic queue, for any length of time. Self-starters are fitted to all Up-to-date private cars, and in due time will be fitted to commercial vehicles; 99.9 per cent, of the motor-cycles at present in use are equipped with kick-starters. Do not stand at the rear of a. car with the engine running in a still atmosphere, or* when there a current of air, as a. breeze, in the direction in which the exhaust gases are being; blown. ■ The ready antidote to exhaust gas poisoning is fresh air, so, after being in the near neighbourhood of running engines, remember to breathe deeply in order to expel from the lungs any eras which may have been inhaled.
