LOCAL AND GENERAL.
The annual meeting of householders will be held at the Hawera School at 7.30 p.m. on Monday, April 30. As there arc eleven nominations for nine seats, an election, will be held at tin meeting. All householders- are requested to attend. The Minister of Finance (Hon. AV. Downie Stewart) has arranged to address a public meeting at Cambridge on Monday next. Considerable importance will attach to the speech, since it is piobabi© that up-to-date references will be made to the financial operations of the country ior the year just closed.
A daring robbery was effected yesterday morning at tlie AA orkingmen’s Club, Auckland, £156 being taken from the safe. Shortly after 9 a.in. the manager, Mr. Robinson, made up the takings from the bar and placed, the money in a bag in the safe ready to deposit it at a. bank. Some time afterwards he found the money had vanished.
At the Hawera School Committee meeting last evening the chairman, Air J. AV. Harding, remarked upon the- excellent building which now housed the infants attending the Hawera primary school and paid a further tribute to- the Education Board’s policy in making such drastic improvements- at the old school building, which, in the opinion of the speaker, would be a model to the district- and a decided benefit to the children and teachers-. The chairman also expressed the hope that the library would be well housed in the new modelled building. The, Tokaora public hall presented a happy and gay scene last evening when about 120 couples took the floor and enjoyed various dances. Hie euchre players, of whom there were about 50, enjoyed some keenly contested games. The ladies’ prizes were won by Alesdames Bloor and AA r atkins, and the men’s prize by Air. D. Bloor.Air. J. Freyne was an efficient M.O. A special effort is being made by the ladies of the Hawera Croquet Club to help the fund for extension of the playing area at their lawns, and they will hold a shop day in the Keen Cut shop in High Street to-morrow. They will welcome contributions of produce, flowers, and cakes, and will have on sale a lot of second-hand clothing in good repair. Included are men’s, clothing and a “shilling table.”
A meeting or the Dominion executive of the New Zealand Licensing Reform Association, together with, the presidents of provincial branches, was lipid at Wellington oil Wednesday, the Rev. P. T. Williams (president of the Auckland branch) presiding. It was decided to convey a resolution to the Government asking for the protection of the franchise on the middle issue and urging the maintenance of the right to vote for some system of public control of the liquor traffic. The association affirmed its intention of continuing to advocate corporate control, and asked for provision for its submission to the-electors.
After a very Interesting holiday, spent in the Hawke’s Bay district, Mr. and Mrs. George Meyrick returned to Hawera on Wednesday evening. Though the- “adventure” at sea upset their arrangements somewhat and was really a very narrow escape, they had otherwise a pleasant time. They were amazed at the wonderfully green state of the country as they saw it on their way through, and were delighted with their visit- to the orchards and the vineyards. Mr. Meyrick said he found scores of small homesteads where the owner made a good living out of his orchard, and all agreed that the season was remarkably good for the growing of apples. McGtuot, Bone tk Co. Ltd. have just opened their now season’s Butterick Patterns. These include, newest styles in costumes, coats, jumper spits, afternoon and evening frocks; new patterns for school blazers, boys’ suits and pyjamas, boys’ shirts and trousers. An indication that if it was the general wish, of fanners -of the distract he would favourably consider contesting the Egmont seat at the forth-coming election was given, by Mir AV. C. Green when waited upon by supporters aitRathotu yesterday. Mr Green, who is chairman of the Egmont County Council, contested the .seat against the successful candidate., the Hon. O. J. Hawken, at the last election.
The yearly change of car numbers led to embarrasment on the part of a car owner residing a few miles out of Hawera, when lie discovered early on Thursday evening that the machine was missing from the parking place in town, where he had left it during the afternoon. Anxious to set the police on the trail of an apparent case of theft he was unable to remember the new number or find a record of it at his home, to- visit which, use was made of a taxi. After many fruitless inquiries, occupied and undamaged, with parcels left in it still intact, resting on the side of a road in the district in the side of a road of the dis'trict in which he resides.
Seeking a live days week, an increased minimum wage, a fortnight’s holiday yearly on full pay, and provision for a joint factory committee of six representatives (three employees ana three employers), the Auckland Tailoresses’ and Other Female Clothing Trade employees’ Union was represented at the Arbitration Court at Auckland yesterday by Miss E. Gossey, immediately following the Auckland Cutters, Trimmers, Pressers and Other Clothing Workers’ Union, which sought a 40hours week and £7 for first-class chart cutters. Other increases were also requested. For tlie employers, Mr. S. Wright said a Dominion award was recently made in Christchurch, and it was difficult to see why Aucklanders in the same industry should be granted anything different. Mr Justice Frazer said the court would get out the awards in due course. Male workers should be included in the general section.
