NOTES AND_COMMENTS (!By ‘■‘•Maecenas.") Loricnt 11, who showed fair form at the recent meeting held at Avondale, is an English-bred horse, imported by Dr. Ping, and had a number of win's on English an c l Irish courses. lie claims engagement at the coming meeting of the Waikato Pacing Club. Braeman, who competed in the hurdle race at Awapuni last Thursday, is one of trainer Y. Colello's team. Braeman's form was such, that he is worth remembering for coming races over jumps. As he is well seasoned, Braeman may be given a run in early steeplechases. The performances of Modern and Olympic at Trentham . last 'Saturday was distinctly disappointing, after their recent displays, as based on their earlier efforts over hurdles, it certainly pointed to this*pair winning hurdle races, when opposed by moderate class.
Polyphemus 'gave a very pleasing display to win the hurdle race at Trentliam last Saturday. As this gelding is endowed with more pace than most jumpers, is bred to stay, and has conformation and size as an additional recommendation, he should develop into quite a fair class hurdler. As a rule, the nominations for tne Great Northern Hurdles and 'Steeplechase reveal some surprise names, but in this year’s list, there are few unexpected. Exceptions are Town Bank and Desert Glow in the Great Northern Hurdles, while a bigger surprise is the latter’s nomination in the Great Northern Steeplechase. Of course, it is generally agreed, that if a competitor is capable of winning a Great Northern . Hurdle race, his chance of negotiating the steeplechase course at Ellerslic is good. The fact of an experienced trainer like F. Loomb nominating a maiden “chaser,” with the pace of. Desert Glow, is sufficient proof of the statement.
Looking more like a prize bull than a racehorse, Ngata was given a run in the hutdle race decided on the second day of t'he Manawatu meeting, held last week. That betters are not very observing, ig shown by the fact that Ngata was a good second favourite amongst the ten starters. ‘Silver Rule was installed a big first favourite for her race at the recent Manawatu meeting. She drew an inside position at the barrier, but missing the jump out, she really never look, ed like winning. Among the starters in the Cloverly Nursery at last week’s meeting hold at Awnpuni, were two fillies by name Ao Mamma, and Tikaokao. According to the correct card, the pair were trained bv their respective owners, rvho happen to be Maori women. Judging by their appearance and the way the fillies raced, there is no reason to think they were under the charge of other than their dusky owners. For quite a number of years past, a number of our more prominent trainers make a pilgrimage to Australia in the early winter. They are usually accompanied by thoroughbreds, who, more often than not, pay the expenses of the trip across the Tasman, at the spring meetings held in New South Wales. Messrs. R. J. Mason and J. H. Jefford are two that have made several
trips to Australia, with teams of horses, but. according to recent statements made by the two trainers mentioned, neither intends taking horses to Australia for the coming spring races, although Mason may _ journey across shortly to enjoy the mid-winter cliinate of New South Wales. Despite the fact that two of the events were of less than two dividend dimensions, the totalisat'or returns of Saturday’s Marlborough meeting held at Trentham went over the £30,000 mark.
It is understood tliftt the Marlborough Racing Clubs were guaranteed something like £I,OOO profit over their recent meeting, but it would appear that even this substantial amount will suffice only for a very short period. Truly, some of our smaller racing, clubs are at their wit’s end to come out even square after a meeting. General regret -was expressed at Awapuni last week, when it was learned that Reremoana would not contest the Awapuni Gold Cup. As this gelding does not run right out a first-class ten furlongs and this season has been confined t’O short distance racing, his trainer showed judgment in not running Reremoana. It is understood that Mr. Moore’s fine performer will run in the J. D. Ormond Gold iCup at the coming meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club. ‘This week, race meetings will be held by the following clubs: Hawke’s Bay, on Friday and Saturday; South Canterbury, on Friday and Saturday; while the Waikato Racing Club will open their autumn meeting on Saturday next, and conclude on Monday of next week. These meetings will conclude the flat racing season of 1927-28. The Egmont Racing Club will have the honour of opening the “cross country” season, which meeting takes place on May 10 and 12. -Cimabue was backed as a certainty for the iManawatu Stakes last Thursday. He looked well, and had the valuable services of R. Reed, who rode one of his good races. 'Even with such advantages, Cimabue was far from the “good thing” his admirers thought, as the ancient gelding, The Hawk, had him doing his best to win by a short half length, in fact over the last half furlong The Hawk was going easily the best. This would suggest, that while Cimabue is a really good handicap performer over short courses, he is many, many pounds below weight for age form. .Although the Wellington Racing Club accepted the responsibility of the recent Marlborough meeting, held at 'Trentham, and the city club’s secretary and office staff managed the clerical part of the gathering, the paid officials "of the Marlborough Club took an active part in the conduct of the meeting, thus the handicapping was done by Mr. J. E. Henrys, the starting bv Mr.’ .T. Vincent, and the judging bv Mr, R, B. Lusk ■Seeing how prominent our older horses were in most of our weight-for-age races, those Avon by Limerick in the spring are the exceptions, it is very evident that our two and three*
year-olds are not equal to those of former years Weight for age races of the present season have fallen to. Star Stranger, Reremoana, The Hawk, Aussie, and Cimabue. These live are very good horses, but by no stretch of imagination, can they be classed as equal to true weight-for-age standard. This is not to be wondered at, in the eases of Reremoana and The Hawk, as both these geldings have raced many seasons, and, despite their Avinning form, are approaching the “sere and yelloAV stage” .of life, a point that only emphasises the statement that our younger horses are not particularly high class. - Before Easter, Ave pointed out that former racing showed Duke Abbey to be partial to race s of no further than a mile. Since that time the black gelding- has been saddled up for four events, and on each occasion he has been remarkably well supported, only to let dOA\-n in no uncertain fashion his army of admirers. A very useful performer,' when AA-ell, over races of about a mile, it is very questionable whether Duke Abbey will ever develop into a stayer, and it Avould appear a wise move to confine his racing to middle distances.
