TAT? AX AKT HOARD MEETING A BUSY MONTH. Tlio work done and reports of officerwere discussed by the members of the Taranaki Education Board at the 'monthly meeting- 'held in New Plymouth yesterday, when there were present. Messrs 6. G. Smith (chairman), A Lees, R. J. Deare and H. Dempsey. Leave of absence was granted to Rev. .7. L. A. Kavll, Messrs P. J. H. White, i’. H. Sims and H. J. Eaves. Among resignations accepted was that of Miss E. M. O’Leary, assistant, j.rponga. Leave of-absence for various per ods had been granted as follows: Miss F. Lay, assistant, Manaia; Mr J. V. Henderson, assistant. Stratford; Miss A McLean, assistant, Pihama; Mr R. J. G Simpson, sole teacher, Al'oeroa. The recommendation of the Teachers’ 'Selection Committee in regard to ajpointments was given effect to as f-ol lows: Mangamingi, sole teacher, Mr Arthur D. Holloway; K'aponga, assist ant, Miss Mavis R. Johnston. The con mittec recommended that Miss Olive Gray be transferred as assistant from M-’vera to Fitzroy. Tha 'chairman reported that during •tl<o month he had appointed the -following relh ving teachers: Pulceng.-Hu, assist'an , Miss J. Keightley; P mt-un. assistant, Ahiss Grant; 'Stratford, (assistant, .Mis-s Keigh-tley; Hawera, assistant, Mr Mason ; Etl'hiam, assistant, Miss Taylor.

As the Department’s approval had been obtained to the appointment -of an -additional assistant at the Pukengahu Scliool the chairman reported having appointed Miss J. A. Keightlev to the position. As the attendance at M-okoia had fallen, tlie average for the .March quarter being only 21, Miss Bremner had been transferred temporarily to 'Riverlea to replace M'iss Brooker, who had been appointed to Stratford MANUAL 'SUPERVISOR ’S' REPORT. The manual supervisor (Mr R. G. Ridling) reported as follows: — Wdodwork. —Classes have been i-on ducted regularly at all centres, and tin- conduct has been good. The work being carried on is in accordance with the scheme laid down. 'There is in same -centres h tendency to spend too much time upon 'theory and drawing, which have a special place in the work, but instructors are realising that- practice is all important, and consequent Iv practice is 'to be given most attention. , . Domestic Science. —The work m domestic science is proceeding satisfact-o-ilv. Attendance has boon good. At tliree centres visited during the month sound work in practical cookery was in operation, and the pupils showed keen interest and a very definite facility in their work. Air Lees said that generally very satisfactory work was being -carried out and transport, too, was ‘satisfactory. AGRICULTURAL INSTRUCTION. The senior -instructor m agriculture (All- R. G. Ridling) -submitted his report a s follows: — Primary .Schools. —The visits ’■>* schools were continued during the month. It is found that generally | suitable schemes of work for the yenr | have been prepared by the teachers, j and that the work has commenced satisfactorily. The failure of many crops j in School gardens has proved most clis- j appointing- to all concerned, but oppor-j tunitv ig being taken to learn h-owj best, to combat’drought conditions suchas have been experienced. ! Bovs’ and Girls’ Club work.—The; plots already examined are lighter than in previous years, but good work is being carried on by the competitors. Secondary 'Schools.—The arrange rr.ents for conducting the work at Onur, ■ alee and Alanaia District High Schools -are proceeding satisfactorily. DEPARTMENTAL MATTER'S. The Education Department notified receipt of a communication advising that the Ararata Hall Committee had agreed under protest to rent the hail for a month at £1 per week. Stratford Alanual Building—The domestic science room and 'corridors, in addition to the room made ready for a dental clinic, have been painted throughout. It was also necessary to le-wiro the electrical system, including the woodwork room. Sthatford Proposed Hot Water Heat ing.—He had made arrangements with the Stratford borough electrical engin roi- to heat one of the classrooms as an experiment and the work would lie put in hand immediately. Workshop. —Thq machinery was in good -order. The staff was busy on joinery* for additions to the Ohura Sch'-o'oi, new residence for 'Ohura, and the new windows for the Hawera primary school rem'odelling. The movable teacher’s b’a'ch for Ka'ipikari was also 'well in hand. PROJECTED WORKS.

Messrs S. G. Smiit'h and P. J. H ' White reported having conferred upon the projected works and applications now before the department, and recommended the following as the order of urgency 'a 1 !, 'the present date. Members generally considered 'that' one-roomed schools with 't Wo 'teachers i should first 'be considered, and it was decided to make 'application in regard to Araralta, Pembroke and Newa'l which were regarded as most urgent. I FINANCE AND BUILDING ' The finance and building committee recommended that the Dotard approve

of the installation of a chip heater in rue Cardiff -school residence, and application be made to the department for a grant, ho .cover one-third 'of the cost. That, the following matters be referred to the board’s architect: Eltham heating of school; K'aponga, curtain for infant room; Ngaere, movable partition in infanr, room. That consideration of the architect’s report regarding motor vehicles for the buildings foremen be referred to Messrs Smith and White. That the teacher at Pihama be grant ed a sum of £fi towards the cost of electrical installation.
