JOURNEY OVER VOLCANOES
500-MILE: AIRWAY IN EAST INDIES. LONDON, Feb. 20. Arrangements tire now being completed for the establishment of the first air service in the East Indies. The route over which mails and passengers will be carried lies between Batavia and Sourabaya, at the opposite extremities of the giant island of -Ta-va. Five hundred miles separate the two ports, and the train journey occupies two days. The air iiners will complete the journey, including at least one stop, in hix hours. Java is the largest Dutch possession, with a population two-thirds the size of that of Great Britain. The Royal Dutch Air Lines, who will operate the service, are building four ail 1 liners, each fitted with three British Jupiter engines. If one engine 'ails the other two will provide ample power to bring the liner safely to her destination.
This is particularly necessary in a country where landing • grounds are difficult to lay out owing to the chain of mountains which bisect the island. Forty-five volcanoes, all of which are liable to become active at any time, are scattered through this range.
