BUSH FIRES
IN MAIN TRUNK DISTRICT. PARTS OF OHAKUNE IN DANGER ROADS IMPASSABLE. [IJY TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION.] OHAKUNE, April 16. A fierce gale enveloped Ohakune, Raetiki, Rangataua, Pokaka, and Horopito in flames. The wind is constantly changing in direction, taking fires in all directions. Portions of Ohakune are- in grave danger. News from other centres is scarce owing to the roads being impassable. Many residences have been surrounded by fire.
A message received by the “Wanganui Chronicle” last night stated that for some weeks tlie peat has been burning on the ridges, and the dry north-easterly wind, which -sprung up on Friday, started fresh fires.
Several farmers pulled down fences in case the fires spread, in order to allow their stock to escape, but in most cases the precaution was unnecessary. On Saturday night the wind died down, but later it began to blow a stiff breeze. It is stated that the 1 fires are slow-burning and are eating into patches of rubbish and fern, thus performing a work which would take men yeans to do. From Raetilii a big blaze- could be seen on Sunday night towards- Ohakune, but the exact locality of the fire- was not- known.
