A PROMISING INVENTION.
Almost exactly three years ago in Wellington the model of a piston type of valve for an internal combustion engine, invented locally, which displayed not only ingenuity, but considerable promise was exhibited (writes ‘•'Autos'’ in the “livening Post.’’ The device was described in “The Past’s’’ motor column of April 18, 1925, and the description broadly holds good, though certain details have been altered. “Autos’’ then said: “The valve under review is in the form of a piston having both a reciprocating and a semirotary motion. The ports which are cast through the piston valve are timed to operate alternatively the inlet and exhaust ports in the valve cylinder, he one piston operating both inlet and exhaust. Among the many outstanding features may be mentioned quick action in opening and closing ports, perfect, lubrication in that the valve receives the same volume of lubrication as the piston proper, highly efficient, cooling, ability to hold compression, simplicity of 'construction, and durability. Noise and vibration arc ’•( duced to a minimum. The bugbears of valve grinding, burnt and bent, stems noise and tappet adjustments, are all eliminated. One heard no more of the invention, which is that of Air Grace, of Napier, until a week or two ago when “Autos" was informed that a working model of an engine with the new valve had been built and tested in London. A report by Mr IT, Tovey, the well-known motor expert, who has been associated with Mr Harry Ricardo, the greatest authority on the petrol engine in the world, was most, favourable and appeared to bear out ail tho claims which had been made for the valve. In writing, Mr Tovey says ho feels fully justified in recommending the inventor to proceed with the matter. The valve is described as a distinct advance over every day practice as applied to poppet' valve gear.
