OPERA HOUSE, TO-NIGHT. • ‘PUBT-ICLTY MADNESS. ’ ’ “Publicity Madness,” a hilarious satire on modern business produced by Fox Films with Edmund L-owe and Lois Moran co-starred in the featured roues, will, open at the Opera House to-night. According; to; a. 11 wi 1 o li*tvo 'tuiis production it is made up of five' reels of laughs with a delightful romance and a variety of thrills thrown m for good measure! The ,situations in which the o-randiloqupnt hero finds himself are especially funny, and the usual ending puts him in complete control of the business- The story itself was adapted by Andrew Benni.son from an original talc by Anita. Loos. It deals with a fresh, garrulous, soap salesman, whose ego is only .surpassed by the daring of Ins advertising schemes. After being fired from one concern he worms his way into another old-fashioned competitor, and from then on things begin to move swiftly and humorously. There is an outstanding supporting programme which will include a lox comedyr “Prudence,” and Fox News.

Wallace MacDonald is the star of the chaptei him adapted from a famous story by Eranii ±l. Spearman, it is said tfiat ttie story has been translated into seven languages, but this is nothing compared to tne picture, which is miaranteed to thrill the fans in any language. The first episode contains many big scenes, including a good old-tasliioned western saloon brawl and a sandstorm on the desert, - m which a beautiful maiden’s life hangs by a zephyr. ~ The second big attraction on tne programme is “The Magician,” the tirst Rex Ingram production for Met-ro-G o 1 dwyn-Mayer since hts widely discussed and highly successful scipen version of Blasco Ibanez “Mare Nostrum.” The story of the new picture is that of a girl caught between the forces of a magician, whom she is unable to resist, and the love for a youim surgeon who has saved her a helpless cripple by performing a. delicate operation on her spine. Ingram has taken the Somerset Maugham story, and with his usual brilliance has developed a powerfully romantic drama. Paul Wegener, noted German character actor, has the title role. Ivan Petrovich, _ a young Serbian actor, plays opposite Miss Terry, and Firmin Gemier, the famous French actor and stage director, enacts a most important character part. There is a big supporting programme, which includes a Pathe News Reel , comedy, cartoon and N.Z. scenic.
OPERA HOUSE! MONDAY NEXT. REGINALD DENNY IN “THAT’S MY DADDY.”
In “That’s My Daddy” which will open a three night season at the Opeia House Hawera, Monday next, when the ultimate triumph of the wholesome screen comedy will be offered. . The story was written by Reginald Dennv who stars in this Universal farce, and who also wrote his previous success “Fast and Furious. I red Newmeyer, the man who directed Harold' Lloyd for three years came directly from the Lloyd organization to direct Denny. “That’s My Daddy is an unusual picture, being m many ways a departure from the farcial (subjects in which Denny has made Ins name and fortune. For screaming situations the film is unsurpassed, there are spots where the comicalities become convulsive. But added to all this is a touch of child pathos injected by the remarkable acting of Jane La erne, a baby prodigy recently discovered by Reginald Denny himself . The cast of this picture is exceptional with Barbara Kent, Wampas Star of 1927, playino 1 the feminine lead and Lillian Rich, well known leading -woman, playing the second lead. Others in the cast are Tom O'Brien, Jane La Verne, Mathilde Brundage, "Wilson Benge, Armand Kaliz, Charles Coleman and Art Currier. . . The story concerns the little girl befriended by Denny and is featured by a gorgeous wedding on board a palatial private yacht. There will be a full programme in support.
