KRAKATOA ERUPTION.

NEW ISLAND FORMED. BATAVIA, March 1. The Krakatoa volcano is showing greatly decreased activity. A new island had been discovered to the west of the old island. It is visible at low tide. The present eruption of Krakatoa began just over a week ago. In the great eruption of 1883 two-thirds of the island was completely blown away, and the gigantic tidal wave to which the eruption gave rise caused the death of 20,000 people, being felt, even in the English Channel. The clouds of dust drifted over Europe and lent astonishing splendour to the sunsets of the period.
