HAWERA TROTS
EASTER CARNIVAL.
PROGRAMME CONCLUDED. ANOTHER RECORD TO GOLD JACKET. The concluding programme of the Hawera Trotting Club's Easter carmeal proved replete with interest yesterday, for another big assembly ot patrons, whose numbers, judged on gate receipts, were only slightly below the total present on the second day of the 1927 gathering. The excellent condition of the track wa.s conducive to speedy performances, and in the principal event another record was established by Gold Jacket. Coming home second to the Waikato gelding Taipare, Gold Jacket from 108 yards behind scratch was credited with thei net time of 4-min 29 3-sseo over the two miles, this being one and twofifths of a second better than the track record of 4min disec established 1 for the distance’ by Anselm last year in winning the President’s Handicap. The winner, Taipare, whose handicap was 12 yards behind, also ran a very fast race, being timed to cover the net distance in 4min 37 2-s.se q, this being only one and three-fifths of a second outside the record for the Cup race of a similar distance established on Saturday by Gold Jacket. Totalisator investors speculated freely, though the surprise administered by the little fancied Taipare in the big race and bv winners of two others evinced a difficulty of making correct estimates, and the total of £19,270 put through the machine showed a decline of £BSB IQs as compared with £20,028 10s on the second day of the 1927 meeting. The total for the two days was £37,272, this being a compare-tiv-ely moderate decline of £4BB on tbe figures for 1927, when the amount invested was £37,760. The staff of officials combining with the president (Mr. B. McCarthy) and the secretary (M.r E. P. Cox) gave efficient and courteous attention to the many demands made upon them, though unavoidable delays prevented the completion of the programme within the scheduled time. Prominent service was again rendered by Mr. J. Gray, who, as honorary judge, gave further evidence of his ability to announce the results with certainty and promptitude, while Mr. A. Mors© gave every satisfaction’ at the starting harrier.’ The handicapper’s duties received the attention of Mr. G. Paul, junior, whose keen discrimination brought the fields well together in the majority of events. The excellent condition of the course reflected much credit on the work of the popular caretaker, Mr. A. Morse, who was the recipient of freely expressed congratulations, and’ the wellkept lawns and flower beds bore evidenc of the care bestowed by the gardener, Mr. D. Stevenson. Thei Hawera Municipal Band, under Lieut. H. C. A. Fox, w r as again in attendance, and rendered appreciated selections. r

Real Todd, Roma Bingen, arid- The Tiger in the Opunake Handicap, and among the seven runnel's Louisiana, proved the outsider with nearly £6OO less than the first fancy, Maxegin. All cleared the barriers well, but Brigand broke up after going a short distance. Bingen Starr and Maxegin were alternate’ leaders over the first half-mile, hut both lostposition through breaking, and Bright Light took the van. Brigand, which had made a fine recovery, was, however, in the lead when a. mile had been covered, Bright Light running next, followed by Maxegin, Louisiana, Kolmar, Anseline and Bingen Starr. Racing down the back stretch Brigand was well clear of the’ other two in the same order, but with three furlongs to go Louisiana made a bid which gave her pride of position at the home turn from* Bright Light, Maxegin and Kolmar. with Anseline coming un on the outside. Tho -withdrawal of Trustworthy, Royal Serene and Roremai reduced the Stewards’ field to twenty. Oora Tacks proved another moderately supported candidate, the investments entrusted to her being about £2OO below the sum on the favoured Pageant-Sliadowland bracket. Silver [Link and Profiteer were left and Cora Tacks went to the front to hold the lead throughout. Thorpie was second to leave the straight-, attended by Satinbird, Beatty, Eoamer, Direct Todd and Audubon Child. Joy Bird tangled and caused Ur.amic to run wide, The leading ox-dor was the eaaae

The thirteen carded for the Kaponga Handicap were reduced to a field of nine bv the withdrawal of Dealer. Hostess. Sailor Boy and Gold Jacket. In a final flutter the public made Derby Lynn a good favourite with the highest individual total of the day and the biggest of the meeting, except for the amount attracted by Great Peter in the cup event. J amatakuru and Lottie Advance also attracted good support. The favourite made an indifferent start hut soon recovered position. Bell Dial was quickest away and down the hack held a lead from Heroic, Tamataknru and Derbv Lynn, with Speed King clear of the remainder. The five comprised the leading division over the first circuit but. Speed King broke and went back when starting the second lap and Nellie Parsons went, after the other four. Bell Dial, Tamatakuru, Heroic and Derby Lynn were close together at the three furlong post, while Nellie Parsons, Speed King and Lottie Advance were moving up fast. Taking the outside at the .straight, entrance, the favourite swept round ahead of Bell Dial and with a final spurt went on to win bv a good length from the fast finishing Lottie Advance, with Sneed King three parts of a. length back, followed bv Heroic, Nellie Parson and Bell Dial.
