TANGIER
SCHEME OF CONTROL. EXPERTS AT WORK. ITALY MODIFIES DEMANDS. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT Received 11.5 a.m. to-day. LONDON, April 8. The Paris correspondent of “The Times” states: After three weeks of secret conferences British, French, Italian and Spanish experts have worked out a scheme for executing Franco-Spanish arrangements affecting Tangier, and have now begun to consider "Italy’s demands. It is understood that- Italy originally wished _ the discussions to include her Mediterranean- aspirations, but her_ -present demands refer only to Tangier. She originally desired the appointment of an Italian officer to the gendarmerie, assistant to the police, chief health officer to the municipality, and a judge to the mixed court. There would have been little chance of their acceptance, but thev have already been greatly modified*. France will retain a- predominant position in Tangier, controlling: the port and rail terminus. A semi-offiical assurance is given that there will be no difficulty in meeting Italy’s wishes, as the French policy is directed towards the Atlantic, not the Mediterranean.—“Times’ ’ Cable.
