‘ ‘Taranlaki is using a tremendous amount of fertiliser at present,” remarked Mr J. E. Mackley, locomotive engineer for the North Island railways at Auckland. “I have just returned front a tour of insipeetio-n, and Hive demand for top-dressing is truly remarkable. I have never seen anything like it. Ministers of the Crown and others have been crying out for more production, and th'tre is ilttle doubt that the farmers in Taranaki are responding to that cry. Big works have been established at Aramoho and Smart Boad, and the district has never had such facilities for obtaining fertilisers before. The cheaper railway freights have been responsible for large increases in carriage by rail, and the department is fully alive to this particular aspect of the change. Ear yc-ars,” continued Mr Maekley, “Taranaki has been noted for its great dairying productive efforts with practically trio top-dressing at all, with the advent of this tensive cultivation on areas already producing in my opinion Taranaki’s future is doubly ‘assured. ”
