BEAUTY BEVERAGES.
At. all times of the year diet plays a most important part' in beautifying the complexion, but never more so than during a heat wave. As the thermometer rises all heating foods must be reduced’ to the minimum, and plenty of cooling liquids taken. More liquid is necessary during a heat wave, and unles more is taken the skin becomes dry and starve d-looking. APPLE WATER. 'This easily-prepared drink stands first amongst cooling summer beverages which help to beautify the skin, and it has one' great advantage—it will not add a fraction ,of an ounce to one ’s weight, no matter how great a quantity is taken. To make it, choose good juicy apples, wash, but do not peel them, and cut into slices a. quarter of an inch thick. Place in a large jug, and add sugar if desired. Pour over the sliced apples freshly 'boiling water, allowing half a pint to every large apple, and cover the jug. Leave it to stand till cold, then strain through a fine sieve, and serve with a slice of lemon floating in each tumbler. BARLEY WATER. Those who suffer with a flushed face during a heat, wave will find that barley water is "wonderfully cooling. Well wash an ounce of pearl barley and put it into a quart of water with the thinly peeled rind of a lemon. (Simmer slowly for an hour, adding when half boiled a lump of sugar. If too thick add another quarter pint of water while it boils. Strain and allow to eool before serving. . CAMOMILE TEA. This most favoured evening beverage amongst Frenchwomen is not only restful for the nerves, but clears and beautifies the complexion, and a cup should be taken just before bedtime by the woman who feels that her skin is not as clear and as fresh looking as it should be. To .make it put four or five dried camomile flowers into a clean teapot. Pour over them half a pint of boiling water and allow to stand for five minutes. Pour off, sweeten to taste, and drink while hot. This is a most beneficial evening drink in summer: LEMONADE. ”*Fresh lemons Hand tap water form an ideal drink for the woman who would keep slim. As many as four or five lemons may be taken daily in this way, and both one’s health and figure will benefit. The lemonade should, however, be taken through a straw to protect the teeth from the acid. For those who prefer the flavour of oranges the juice of these may be substituted for that of lemons.
