HAWERA HIGH SCHOOL
FOOTBALL CLUB. The annual meeting of the Hawera High School club was held in the Engineering hall yesterday afternoon, Mr. W. W. Thomas occupying the chair. The report stated:—“The season proved a. very successful one for both, senior and junior teams. The first fifteen were runners up in the fourth grade competition in Taranaki. During the year three school matches were played. Against Stratford at Hawera, they were defeated by 13 to 11, and against Stratford at Stratford they Won by 12 to 6, annexing the Sargent Cup which was subsequently lost to Feilding at Hawera by 11 to 5. The first fifteen also sent teams to three seven-a-sido tournaments at Mokoia, Alton and Patea, and were twice runners up in these competitions. The second fifteen competed in the fourth grade competitions and played three school matches. At Stratford, where they were defeated by 12 to 9, at Opunake they were defeated by 11-3 and against Opunake at Hawera where they won by 37 to nil. The junior teams played successfully in the primary school competitions. The club had also a very fine midget team whose success in several matches was due to the coaching of Mr. Gray. The Good Cup was again won by the Literary Division. The Club wishes to extend thanks to Messrs. TV. TV. Thomas, A. Larkman, D. Gower, M.Gray, J. Fin cl later and R. Heward, for the valued coaching received during the year. Thanks are due also to the following people:-—Mr. J. Goodwin for assistance from the Rugby Union. The Automobile Association and the Rotary Club for their help in entezdaining the Feilding boys on their visit. Mrs. Peterson and Mrs. Taylor u*lio so kindly entertained the team at the seven-a-side tournaments at Patea and Alton respectively. The club wishes to accord heaTty thanks to Mr. Clement, for the interest he showed in the club and for the splendid banquet which he provided. Thanks are also due to those people who billeted the Feilding boys during their stay. In connection with the election of officers, it was resolved that first year boys do not have a. vote, but they have a representative on the committee. The matter of entering the teams for the various grades was left to the committee to deal with. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to the Hawera Football Club for the payment of fees during the year and for the interest taken by members in the club. Election of officers resulted: Club Captain, J. Peterson; Vice Captain, D. Wills; Sec. C. Sturrock; committee senior representatives H. Barker, 0. Nickolas, Junior Rep. L. Edwards. Mr. A. Gray, Headmaster, said that the school was now entering another football season, and he hoped it would be as successful as the cricket season has been. This season would be the greatest year for football in the history of New Zealand on account of the forthcoming tour of the All Blacks in South Africa. The value of these matches must not- he overlooked, as. football has liecome- a meansi of bringing parts of the Empire- together. He also referred to- the visit- of Stan Lay to the Olympic games and laid he -hoped the time would come when some of his hearers took part in these games—the. first stage was to get into the senior fifteen—that should be the aim of every hoy izi the school. A vote of thanks to the Press concluded a very enthusiastic meeting.
