ELTHAM CLUB
OFFICIAL OPENING. Quite the largest crowd of players anu /spectators seen at an opening oi ttie golf club lor tne season in Jiltiiain was present at the links yesterday, when the onicial opening of the season ior 1928 was performed and it is certain that this was the most success!ul in the history of the club. An air of enthusiasm pervaded the gathering, and the news that a considerable number of new members cauld be expected increased the feeling of optimism for the luture of golf in that district. There, were present visiting players from Opunake, New; Plymouth and 11aweia, and nil thoroughly enjoyed the a iter i loon. Eltluuu players, ladies and men. are ideal hosts and they looked alter visitors in a way that made all feel as though they" were members, instead of players from other clubs.
The day was gloriously fine and the course, considering it was the opening, was in capital order and the golf was generally good. Before the beginning of the competition. a Canadian foursome, the captain Mr. J. J t. Weir, in the unavoidable absence of the president, Mr. C. J. Belcher, said he was very pleased indeed to see so many present ami gave a cordial welcome to all visitors and added that the committee was grateful to the' ladies for the way in which they made preparations .for entertaining the company. He said it was good indeed to «eo that- visiting players had come from so far away as New Plymouth and Opunake and that they were, always glad to see their Haivern friends. He mentioned for the benefit of the' local players the desire of the committee that they should all be particularly careful about the etiquette of the game and added that “wardens’* had been appointed from, the older members to see that offences against etiquette were not committed. He stressed a few of the more important features to be observed. He then declared the season open for 1928 and hoped all would have a happy time on the links and the club its most successful season.
Mrs. J. T. Quin then drove the first ball, amid cheers from the assembly and play was thus ushered on for the season.
The. Canadian foursome was most enjoyable and was won by Mrs. Cork ill and Mr. A. A. Stewart, with, a nett score of 43 for 13 holes. Afternoon tea was served by the ladies,
