Commenting in the House of Representatives to-day on Mr. Hughes’ remarks, the Prime Minister (the lit. Hon. S. M. Bruce): rebuked him for making incorrect statements. When an ex-Prime Minister began making incorrect statements on international affairs, he said, it had a disastrous e fleet

The Italian Consul-General at Melbourne characterised Mr. Hughes’ remarks as childish, discourteous and vulgar. His opinion of them could be summarised in a statement that in future lie would include Mr. Hughes among the limited number of irresponsible persons in Australia, who, without knowing what they talked about, seemed to find pleasure in offending Italians by the use of opprobrious terms whcji referring to them.
