NOTES AND COMMENTS
(By ‘‘Maecenas.’’) Airtight was very unlucky to suffer de.eat on the second day of the Rangifcikei meeting. Mount Marta raced at Bulls in the name of Mr. J. R. L. Stanford, in whose colours Rercola won both the Great Northern and Grand National Steeplechases. As a two-year-old Aropeta was a »ery nice colt, and raced well enough in his early efforts at that age to suggest a useful career, hut his later efforts were poor. During the last few reeks Aropeta has won twice in moderate company, but he will never rise to great heights. As usual, horses trained in this province are freely nominated for the Feilding meeting. According to his trainer, Kiosk is at present enjoying a spell, hub. his name appears amongst the Feilding nominations.
Trainer T. F. Quinlivan was a spectator at Bulls last Thursday, and stated that Treshain was a certain runner m the coming Great Easter and Autumn Handicaps to be decided at Riccarton at Easter.
Nastori got badly away on the opening day at Bulls, and then ran a good race, but when solidly; supported the next day she finished last.
Partaga is very well just now and ran two excellent races at the Rangitikei meeting. Had he had luck in the running on .Thursday he must have jeaten Ruanui.
Vivo won the recently run Rangitikei Cup with a little in reserve, hut ivlien a good favourite on the second lay she did not show much courage .vhen tackled by Ripo. Trainer F. Tilley is taking Laughing Prince, Mandane, Freehold, and Limited to Ellerslie at Easter, but Ruanui and Thrift from the same stable will compete at Feilding. On the first day of the Rangitikei meeting Manly got his tongue over the jit, and then ran fourth. On the strength of the showing, Manly came n for, solid support on the second day. He began well, and, racing to the turn, was going well in the lead when his rider thoughtlessly allowed the gelding to run very wide and extinguish any chance ho held.
Although Limerick did not meet Gothic in the Rawson Stakes last Saturday, he beat a great performer in Amounis, who is one of the greatest “milers” Australia has produced. The time (1.513-5) was good, although slower than Heroic’s record time of 1.504. Limerick’s win shows that Jones has Limond’s son at his best. After the race for the Trentham Gobi Cup decided at the recent meeting of the Wellington Racing Club, one heard regrets expressed that Limerick was not included in the field, some going the length of saying that oil the day Star Stranger would have beaten Limerick. This, of course, is absurd, for though Star Stranger is good he cannot be classed with his younger rival. At Riccarton last November Star Stranger carried 9.4 into second place in the New Zealand Cup, and there were some at that time who quite expected Star Stranger to beat Limerick in the Canterbury Oup of 24 miles (run on the third day of the meeting). Despite the fact that Star Stranger had done a great preparation for the New Zealand Cup, while Limerick had been eased in his work on account of his hard campaign in Australia, Limerick made a common hack of Star Stranger to win pulling up. Is further proof of superiority wanted ?
