ASSAULTS ON GIRLS

SYDNEY HORRIFIED. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. SYDNEY, March 26. Sydney has been horrified during the past few days by two gross assaults on children. In the firVt instance a girl of ten years, en route to school, was dragged into the scrub, tier assailant threatening to knife her unless she accompanied him. There lias been sueh a public outcry that the Government is offering a reward of £SOO for the apprehension of the assailant.

The second ease concerns a girl of 13, living in a widely separated suburb, who was a victim of a similar attempted outrage, but her screams attracted assistance. In the latter case a youth has been arrested. Two similar crimes in succession aroused a public outcry and a demand for mbre drastic punishment for this class of offence, which since the abolition of capital punishment has been very prevalent.
