The death is announced of Mr. Samuel Clowes, Labour member for Hanley Division, aged 64. —A.P.A. and “Sun” cable.

An A.P.A. and “Sun” cable message from London states that the Duke of Abercorn’.s governorship of the North of Ireland has been extended for ■ six years. Messrs W. O’Callaghan and L. O. Hooker returned to-day from Wellington, where they attended the halfyearly meeting of the North Island M-ctor Union as delegates of the South Taranaki Automobile Association. Brigadier-General A. W. Andrew, Chief Commissioner of the Boy Scouts in New Zealand, is at present in Hawera, and' is staying at the Central Hotel. Mr R. A. G. Fowkc, of the Now Zealand Railway Department, Wellington, took over his new duties as stationmaster this morning. Mr H. W. Middleton, of Invercargill, who has -been in Hawera for the past few days, left for Wellington by the express' train this morning, where be attends? the arbitration conference to be opened to-morrow. Many compliments were paid to Mrs Cramp, who has just -reiinquisned control of the Central Hotel after 14 yeans, when she was entertained at a banquet on Saturday evening by Mr and Mrs Everett. There wens present about twenty of her friends, and she was given a most cordial reception. After an excellent dinner put on by “mine host,” the health of Mrs Cramp was very, happily proposed' by Mr Everett and honoured with enthusisam. Tributes were paid by Mr G. H. Ryan, Mr ft. Morrissey and Mr J. Goodwin, all speaking most highly of the! work of Mrs Cramp and of the high esteem in which -she was he’d in the community. A presentation was then made of a handsome eight-day gold clock, enclosed, in a heather case and specially designed for tourists. A reply couched in happy terms was made, on behalf of Mrs Cramp, by Mr Farmer. The toast of Mr and 'Mrs Everett concluded a very pleasant gathering. Mrs Cramp intends to visit her son in Hamilton and some friends,, returning to Hawera for Easter and later taking -a trip to the Old Country. Her many friends all wish her bon voyage and a good holiday.
