CHRISTCHURCH DIAMOND JUBILEE.

At a public meeting yesterday, it was decided to celebrate the diamond jubilee of the city by raising £25,000 for the construction of a riverside boulevard along the lower reaches of the Avon. FIRE INQUIRY AT WELLINGTON.. WELLINGTON, March 23. Another inquest was held upon a fire, ail outbreak in a building in Willis Street being the subject. The report of the Fire Board said that the circumstances pointed to a deliberate attempt to. burn it. down. The building was owned by A. H. Wallace, and was insured for £ISOO. The fire occurred in t room occupied by A. W. Phipps, a tailor by occupation. Evidence was given that kerosene was found all about and a tin of it was found in another room. Phipps had three rooms in all. He had a policy for £SOO and the insurance company paid him £149. Phipps was not called and Mr. Watson .said that lie was not sure that Phipps knew the inquiry was being held. It was adjourned to obtain his attendance, but as he could not be found, a further adjournment was made till to-day. CLOSE SEASON FOR. PARADISE DUCKS. WELLINGTON, March 23. In order to preserve the paradiso ducks from extinction, a close season has been declared for these birds, and it is possible that this will be further extended next year. MOTOR. CYCLISTS COLLIDE. HOKITIKA. March 23. As the result o.f a collision between two motor cycles at the intersection of Rollcston and Stafford Streets, Edward Rooney, telegraphist of Kanieri was admitted to the Westland Hospital with a fracture of the right leg at the thigh and with both bones of an arm broken. The other rider only suffered bruises. Both cycles, were considerably damaged. THEATRE EMPLOYEES’ REQUEST. WELLINGTON, March 23. The front of the house theatre employees wore granted' permission to request a Dominion award' by the. Arbitration Court.
