HAWERA TRACK NOTES AND

TOPICS.

(By ‘‘Limited.”) It was an off period at the racecourse this morning as most trainers were busy shipping horses for Rangitikei by early train. Reremoana, back from his Challenge Stakes triumph, was out exercising, and looks even better for the trip.

J. Fryer returned on Sunday, but left Bright Glow and Mendip at Bulls until the conclusion of the meeting there —Mendip being engaged in the Ngatiapa- Hack race of seven furlongs. R. Brough has- Captain Gazely in work again. The old fellow looks in great heart to start work —another veteran in Eiuclire has resumed track work under M. Conway’s care. Lady Desmond who will most likely start favourite in the Rangitikei Cup to-morrow, was trotted and cantered before being taken to- the train. The following horses, with their trainers, left by early and express trains this morning: Eka, Airtight, Orcades (J, Fryer) ; Royal Acre, Mountain Bell (R. Brough), Gasnapper, War Flame (M. Conway); Lady Desmond (O. Cox); Partaga, Vivo (G. Jackson) ; Bonogne (H. Vine); Aropeta, Manly, Kyngzone, Hipo, and Oration were also passengers for Bulls. The Opunake Club is to be congratulated o-n its successful meeting—both, totalisator and gate receipts were up—the latter constituting a record. Locally horses were successful in four events—Cool Mint (Maiden), Barryanda (Railway and President’s), while Benzora- prevailed in the St. Patrick’s Handicap. Minor placings were secured by Orazone, Gasnapper, Bisox, Lady Cavendish, War Flame, San Fera, Airtight, Egeria, and Eka, bringing the total prize money "won to £690.

Orazone the favourite in the cup had a very unlucky run—Vivo came back on her at a critical part of the race and she- was last turning for home where she made a remarkably fine run to get up second. No excuses can be made for Silvermiue -as he hipped off well and went for about a furlong then fading out of it .and never being in the firing line after. It was- an inexplicable performance to liis connections, who fully expected him to he first or second. Barryanda, by landing a double, came out of her -shell. She fully deserved her wins as she came from the back each time and won decisively. Barryanda has been troubled with kidney complaint more or less in the past, but this has evidently yielded to her trainer’s treatment. Benzora showed some of liis old time brilliancy in liis win. Once heads were turned for home he came away and won easily. It is not generally known that he had .a life in the race as something struck him on the leg, only t-ho hock boot -saving a nasty gash.
