NOTI® AND COMMENTS
R ANG IT! KKI MEETING
(By “Maecenas.”)
The annual meeting of the Rangitikei Racing .Club opens to-morrow and concludes on Thursday. The .acceptances are good and the gathering is usually most enjoyable. Jvilburn lias earned a penalty for the Ohakea Hurdles, and at the present weight Elysianor may beat him. Modern i,s a promising recruit. Many of the acceptors for the Trial Plate are unknown, but on public form Fee Simple and Vexillum should perform well. The field for the Scott Memorial is small, but comprises some smart “sprinters.” Miss Pat at 7.8 is well handicapiied .and should fully extend Yast Acre and company. Some useful “hacks’’ appear as aeceptorsi for the Pfikenui Hack. Airtight goes well over the distance, but on Trentham form Court Jester should be a good favourite. Quite a- good class field is engaged in the Clifton High-weight. ' As. Rluanlii looked well at Wanganui last month, ho will be very troublesome to his opponents. Raineses showed , a lot of pace at Trentham last week and White Ringlet was very prominent at the late Wanganui meeting. So this pair should run well in the Carnarvon Handicap. If at anything like her best, Lady Desmond will lie hard to beat in the Cup, but she may possibly require, a race. So Tvilmiss and Paitonn may be a pair that will strip in better condition. After his good form l at Trentham, Mendip will have plenty of admirers for the Ngatiapa Hack, but he may be reserved, so Tanagra should not lack support.
NOTES. The racing witnessed at Trentham last Saturday can he classed as equal to the best seen there. Laughing Prince ivas actually last to turn for borne in the principal handii cap last Saturday, and although Tresham, Hynanna and Black Mint all put in late runs, Laughing Prince was the best of all.
Trainer Quinlivan continues to improme Tresham, and the black son of Tressidy was only just beaten last Saturday. Tresham will next appear at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Easter meeting. Alendip was somewhat unruly at the barrier at Trentham last Saturday, and his behaviour possibly cost him the race, as be finished a very close third. Trainer J, Fryer was confident Bright Glow would extend the good class “sprinters’.’, engaged at Trentham last Saturday, but many keen followers of racing could not give her much chance, basing their arguments on the point that she had been trained for distance racing and therefore would not- he brilliant enough. Bright Glow extinguished these arguments by making an exhibition of the field. The trainer of Satrap, gave that gelding little or no ehanco in Saturday’s Trentham Gold Cup, ancl had he had the last word, Satrap would not have started. Rapier looked well when saddled up for the big weight-for-age race at Trenthain last week. .1 iis connections were very confident. He was well paced iluriiig the first three parts of the contest, and three furlongs from the post was well clear of Star Stranger, but over concluding stages Rapier lost much ground. Lysander ran two excellent races at Trentham, and on the showing, is worth remembering for his E.llerslio engagements. Li carrying 9.5 to victory in the Pacific Handicap last Saturday and running the six furlongs in I.l'l 3-5, Episode put up a performance that must entitle, her to a chance in the Champagne Stakes at .Ellorslie, hut as
Raasay and Prince Humphrey will both oppose Episode, it may be expecting too much of her. The totalisivtor increase of nearly £15,000 shown at the recent meeting of the Wellington Racing Club, was unexpected by the officials of the club. Trentham is possibly the most cosmopolitan and popular of all New Zealand racecourses and but for the fact, that its distance (IS miles) is rather too far from Wellington the .meeting held there would be even more populai. The classical and weight-for-age races at the recent Wellington meeting were a great success, and the club were well repaid for some of the disappointing events of this class decided in the past. Even in the Trentham Gold Cup great interest and betting was .indulged in, three of the four runners carrying over £SOOO in aggregate. And what a great race it was! Apart from the great time registered, Satrap set the pace and had Rapier and Star Stranger galloping at top from the word “go” and kept the big crowd at fever heat till the post was passed. Reremoana, Bright Glow and Mendip were the only Taranaki representatives at the Wellington meeting and their record was a fine one, as both Reremoana and Bright Glow won races. Bright Glow ran second in her other start and Mendip registered very close second and third positions. Rarely do horses from this province attend outside racemeetings without securing a fair portion of the. stake money offering. While Star Stranger registered a meritorious performance to win the Gold Cup at Trentham last Saturday, Satrap must also come in for almost the game credit, as he set a wonderful pace from the barrier rise, and it was only in the last eighty yards that Star Stranger (aided by all the ability and great horsemanship of R. Reed) headed the game three-year-old. One is safe in stating that had Satrap been ridden by a rider of Bleed’s ability, he and not Star Stranger must have won.
