NORMANBY SHOW.

SUCCESSFUL CONCLUSION

FINAL LIST OF AWARDS.

The efforts of the management of the Normanby Horticultural Society were recognised oil the concluding day of the annual show yesterday by a gratifying attendance of the public, which took full advantage of the weekly halfholiday and the prevailing glorious weather. The Hawera Highland Pipe Band was in attendance and submitted a gooci programme of popular Scottish airs. Members of the band also contributed the requisite music for the dancing events. In an interlude of the latter Miss Jean (MiicLaclilan gained much applause for an exhibition hornpipe. A very good measure of the success of the show is due to the tact and method, born of long experience, of the society’s popular secretary, Mr. Don Stewart, and his equally experienced assistant, Mrs. Stewart. Everything went with a smooth swing and nothing seemed to tie forgotten. The hackneyed expression “the right man in the right place” hardly conveyed a full appreciation of the worth of Mr. Stewart in his official capacity. Mr. Johnstone ispolte .highly of the Black Orpington pullets, and referred to the exceptionally good entry in the class. The winning bird was “an Orpington all over,” and this almost applied to several others. In Leghorns the browns were rather ordinary as a whole, though the cockerel class was fair. The winuer of the white pullet class was exceptionally good. The Minorca cockerels suffered by comparison with the liens, “There was not a duffer in the lot of Rhode Island Reds shown, said the judge. The Rev. IT. Curran’s winning exhibit in the Rhode Island cock class, and Mr. H. Kemp’s hen secured tlio prizes for best birds in tlie show because tliey Were the best without question. The duck section was particularly good. Among tlie Indian Runners the winner of tlio young bird class (Mr. D. A. Stewart’s) was pronounced by the judge to be the best lie had ever seen exhibited anywhere. Bantams were strongly represented, but, unfortunately, tliero were too many varieties shown together. There should be a wider classification in future shows. The exhibits in pigeon and canary classes showed an improvement on those at previous shows, though there was room for still further extension in the latter section. . POINTS PRIZES. Poultry.—D. A.
