Newspapers reports from Santos state that it is estimated that more than 209 were killed on Saturday through a landslide in Mont Serrat, which buried many houses and streets. Received 9.45 a.m. to-day. BUENOS AIRES, March 11. A message from Santos, Brazil, states that eighteen bodies have been recovered .from the avalanche from Monte Serratt, situated in the city’s centre, which occurred on Saturday, burying a hospital, fourteen houses and some 200 people. Frantic digging among the earth and rocks for others is proceeding. The shifting of the earth is hindering operations.
[Monte Serrat is an eminence 700 ft above the city of Santos, Brazil’s great coffee export port. The summit of Monte Serrat is reached by a Junieular railway, and from there a magnificent view can be obtained of the town and harbour and surroundings.]
