STRATFORD JUBILEE.

“THE ALL AGED STAKES.’’

(By “Physical Culturist.”)

The committee of the Strafford Jubilee sports have adopted the idea suggested in these columns some months ago and have included in their programme “The All Aged Stakes,’’ open to all who have competed in the Taranaki district since the first meeting was held in the province. It has been well named “The All Aged Stakes,” and the distance, a 50 yards dash, is most suitable —the •minimum ,agb: Jis 50 years. It may not be generally known that Ilawera” district is the home of one or two who competed at the first Taranaki spor.ts meeting held at Patea. Mr William Williams, of Meremere, was one of the original competitors, and I gather from another old -competitor, that far seven years he was the champion sprinter of the district. Another resident -of this district who in those early years was a classy performer was Mr George Broughton. -Still another wa s Mr .Adam Sargent, now a resident of New Plviiioutli, for many years a line allround athlete and a great jumper. I have heard old time athletes extol these three men’s deeds. Great, rivals in high jumping were Sargent and Broughton, each man capable of sft lOin high jump. There is a general desire to see these three old : time representatives foregather with many others at Stratford on the 28th ins-t. Invitations have been issued to a large number of old athletes, and these have been requested to send names and addresses of others in order that they also may be invited. I understand that Alf Arthur and Harry Vine, two of Hawera’s representatives, are in steady training with the object 'of effecting the comeback act. I have heard of other dark horses round the mountain, who harp been training in the Sidev light. Who can pick the winner?
