Denouncing the Australian Treaty as it a#‘ec:ts the dairy industry, Mr Barber, Conservative membeir for Fraser Va'dey. in the House, argued that Australia had power to amend the pact, which Canada would not do. _ 'There was no guarantee that Australia wciuld not make changes affecting paper and canned .salmon. He called the. treaty the greatest; blow the dairy industry bad ever received. Steps bad been taken by tlie Minister of Finance in the direction of securing from Australia, some new concessions incidental to the treaty. Canada seeks a workable position, particularly for lumber items and box shook*. The Government thinks Canadian matrial should have preference against Sweden and United States. DAIRYMEN’S REQUEST. IMMEDIATE TERMINATION OF TREATY. NOT LIKELY TO BE GRANTED. Received 12.50 p.m. to-day. OTTAWA, March 6. The immediate termination of the Australian treaty was demanded by a delegation from the National Dairy Council of Canada which met the Mmister of Finance and members of the Cabinet. Mr Langford, representing the Break anil Cake Makers’ Association, spoke against the treaty on the subject of raising duties. The Hon. Mr. Robb promised consideration of the requests, but the opinion here is that they are not likelj to be granted. . The argument that butter imports would depress the market is not entertained by the Government Statistician, who denies that the volume of imports is such as would affect the current market.
