Lake lias been created for their special benefit, says the “Auckland Star.’’ Since the impounding of the Waikato waters the birds have flocked to .the new lake, and on a recent launch trip a party of Aucklanders counted hnni reds. * Shooting enthusiasts are viewing the prospects with feelings o' pleasure, as there will be neithe: muddy swamps to wade through nor he prospects of camping for hours ir x damp “loo,” while the birds will have a narrow space to rise in when they try te take to the wing. The Auckland Acclimatisation Society has - b'ed to take steps to have approxim. ately a five miles’ strip of the lake from the north end set aside as f sanctuary in order that- the birds may have a sporting chance. The wife of the preliminary boxer, Joe Nugent, formerly of Melbourne, caused a stir at the Broken Hill Stadium on a recent Saturday night. When her husband was beaten- she jumped through the ropes and smacked the face of the victor, George Avery She was hooted vigorously by the erowe as she jumped around the ring until the police took her out. The Railway Department has arranged an excursion train from 'Wanganui and intermediate stations to Opunalce for Sunday, 11th inst. A special concession in fares has been made and a. large number of residents of South Taranaki will no doubt avail themselves of the opportunity of visiting this popular seaside resort.
