The Wellington Amateur Swimming Centre conducted a carnival at the Lower Hutt baths last _ night, when several provincial championships were decided. In an attempt to lower his record of 69 l-ssec for the 100 yards, B. Gallatc, the New Zealand 100 and 220 yards junior fresh-water record holder, succeeded in cutting off the fifth of a second, Results of the important events are: — 100 yards provincial championship W. Cameron I, C. Ciaridgo 2, L. Lensk 3 Time, Olsec. Won by a foot. 220 yards breast-stroke provincial >e ham pi on ship—W. Cameron 1, R. Spry 2. R. Hepburn .3. Time, Oman 31sec. Won by two yards. 440 yards provincial championship— C. Claridge 1, P. Pelham 2, Blakeley o. Time 6min 0 2-sscc. Claridge led all the way and won by 15 yards. HAWERA TEAM AFIELD. SUCCESSES AT STRATFORD. A team of Hawera swimmers visited the Stratford Club’s annual carnival last evening and appeared with conspicuous success in several events. In the 50 yards open handicap first and second places in the final were filled by G. Meyrick and A. Walker, both of whom started from 4sec. The time was 32 l-ssec. Other Hawera Chib men who gained places in the heats were Y . Spragg (third), O. Robb (first), C. Dovvdie (second), E. Griffin (third), E. Sage (third). Four heats proceeded the final and other Hawera swimmers who gained places were C, Roob (first). C. Dowdle (second), V. Spragg, E. Griffin and Rlalph Sage (thirds). _ The intermediate division swimmer, A. Dowdle, with a handicap of 3sec, swam a good second to G. Bookes, of New Plymouth, in the open 100, the winner just getting home from scratch in Imin. 13 4-ssec., while the 220 yards open was won off 9sec by B. Ryan, the time being 3min. 17sec. Other successes of Hawera representatives were: Open dive, R,. Livingstone 1, Miss Z. Spragg, 2; ladies 25yds handicap. Miss Z. Spragg 2; dual relay 50yds, Miss Z. Spragg and V.
