TAWHITI SPORTS CLUB.
FIRST ANNUAL MEETING. CURRENT SEASON’S PROGRAMME The first annual meeting of the Tawniti Sports Club was held in the Tawhiti Hall on Monday evening, Mr. J. 13. Laurenson presiding over an attendance of about 30 members.
Referring to the sports gathering of March 30, 1927, the chairman congratulated members on the excellent work carried out and the success which had attended the occasion, the profit amounting to £46 12s sd. This was an exceedingly encouraging result of tlie club’s initial gathering, and he expressed the hope that future programmes would prove equally successful. On behalf of the club he thanked all who had helped towards the success achieved, particularly the ladies, whose work in attending to the refreshments and catering, had been largely responsible for the finance realised. ELECTION OF OFFICERS.
The election of officers resulted as follow: Patron, Mr. H. G. Dickie, M.P. (re-elected); president, Mr. J. B. Laurenson (re-elected); vice-presidents, Messrs. J. W. Alexander, A. Appleyard, W. Reid (re-elected), and H. Thrush; lion, secretary, Mr. R. McCay; general committee, officers ex officio, and Messrs. J. Apnleyard, J. Bublitz, E. Cox, J. Clout, *J. Casserley, H. Dawson, J. Dunlop, G. Larcom. W. Minhinnick, J. Mathis, O. McGlade, C. Ogle, J. Pickering, G. Pickering, J. Pinnell, “Scotty” Panenui, W. Russell, W. Slater, G. Thompson, J. Walker, J. Winks, D. Wills, W. F. Wallace (reelected), and Messrs. J. Bullan, P. Korau, W. Ngeru, G. Reid, Turn Pama, F. L. Knowles, E. M. Beeehey, El. Somers. ADDITIONAL ATTRACTIONS.
Wednesday, April 4, was fixed as the day of the next sports meeting, and it was decided to organise a concert and dance for the evening, when Mr H. G. Dickie, M.P., would he rerequested to present the trophies won during the d.ay. The programme was revised, many attractive features being added, and the secretary was authorised to have posters printed after conferring with the Hawera Amateur Athletic Club concerning items tq be arranged by that body. Among the new events approved by the meeting was a competition for trottens capable of drawing up to 15 cwt, to be ridden bareback for onejnile. Another novelty was an apple-bobbing competition on horseback and a thread-the-needle competition on horseback. Special prizes being presented by Mr W. F. Wallace. It was decided that the pony jumping events previously limited to novice contestants should he made open tq all-comers and the prize money was increased in each instance. JUDGES- APPOINTED. The following judges were re-appoint-ed: Messrs R. Crocker (horse events), R-. H. Leece (car events), Alex Bissetf (dancing), Donald McLeod (piping), while the- appointment of judges of athletics, cycling and field events was left to the Athletic Club. Mr P. Eastbury was re-appointed as clerk of course. The committee was requested to meet at the hall to- report progress on Monday 7, March 12.
