STILL GOOD
PRICES FOR WOOL.
KEEN DEMAND AT NAPIER. SOME LINES SHOW ADVANCE. [BY TELEGRAPH—TRESS ASSOCIATION.] NAPIER, Feb. 28.
The fourth wool sale of the season opened at Napier last night, when about 10,700 bales out of a total catalogue of 22,654 bales were sold. A bench of 60 odd buyers sat, and competition was steady all through. 'Germany and France were well in the market, taking large quantities of the better class wo-ols. Competition from Bradford was also keen. Wool suitable for America sold at high prices. Continental purchasers took the majority ef pieces and bellies, while there was very good competition from France and New Zealand for lambs’ wool. Prices, on the whole, we re well up to the level of previous sales, especially for better quality wools, of whioh large quantities were offered. Some fleeces showed seed, and some lambs’ wool was infected with smut. There was an absence of the usual generous quota, of Poverty Bay and East Coast wools, only 2588 bales- of this class being catalogued. The deficit was held to be due to the policy of northern growers this year in shipping their fleeces direct to the Old Country.
The demand throughout w r as insistent, passings being estimated at not more than five per cent. The sale will lie continued this morning. Unofficial figures give the movements of the sale, compared with the Napier January sale, as follows: Merino, par; Southdown, Id advance; halfbreds, par, occasionally Jd advance; crossbreds, fine, medium and coarse, ]d to Id advance; lambs’, bellies and pieces, Id advance, sometimes lid; crutchings, par.
