RAIN AT DUNEDIN. (BY TEI. EG HA PH—PRESS ASSOCIATION.) .‘DUNEDIN, Feb. 27. The warm dry spell broke late on Saturday- night, eokl showery rain setting in from the south and continuing all Sunday and this morning. SATISFACTORY SPEED TRIALS. WELLINGTON, Feb. 27. The Minister of Cook Islands, Sir Maui Pomare, has received advice from the High Commissioner that the reliability' speed trials of the Maui Pomare, the new island steamer, were highly satisfactory. The vessel is leaving Dublin to-morrow, and will commence loading for New Zealand at Liverpool on Wednesday, and it is anticipated ishe will sail at the end of the week, proceeding via Panama and Apia, and is due at New Zealand in the third week of April. HEAVY RAIN AT WANGANUI. WANGANUI, Feb. 27. Rain set in at midnight, continuing throughout the morning. At ten o’clock this morning the fail registered was 1.72 inches.

HOMESTEAD DESTROYED BY FIRE

GISBORNE, Feb. 27

A two-storey Id-roomed homestead belonging to Mr J. Prendergnst, at Piiha, was destroyed by fire last alight. A small outbreak had occurred in t-lie washhouse during the afternoon and was believed to have been extinguished. Mr Prendergast, while endeavouring to save some effects from the upper storey, had a narrow escape, a benzine lamp exploding and necessitating his beaking through a window to get awayThe house was insured for £2OOO, but the contents were uninsured.

IMPORTATION OF TOMATOES

WELLINGTON, Feb. 27

Replying to a deputation of tomato growers on a question of importing tomatoes from Cook Islands, Sir Maui Pom are to-day st ate d that Cook Islands supplied one-third of the tomatoes on the market during November and December. If this importation were prohibited, the people of the Dominion would he deprived of one of principal sources of this highly valuable fruit food.
