For theft of £8 18s 4d from his employers, an assisted immigrant named James Park, aged 20, received two years’ probation at the Police Court to-dav.

CHARGE OF NEGLIGENT DRIVING

DISMISSED. AU OK LAN D, Feb. 27. A charge of negligent driving a motor lorry, thereby causing the death oi an elderly l Maori named Wetere Paki on December 30, preferred at the Police Court against Claude Francis Stevens, was dismissed by Mr Hunt, S.M., without calling on the defence. The Maori, who was very feeble, was crossing at the junction of two streets when the lorry struck him, breaking one leg, and he died- in .hospital. Eye-witnesses said that the Maori hesitated when in front of the lorry.

MOTORIST FINED £SO. WANGANUI, Feb. 27.. George Lambert Bruce Williams, storekeeper at Fordell, vvas fined £SO this morning for being in a state of intoxication while in charge of a motor car. Evidence was given for the defence that he was a sober man apart from this lapse. The magistrate (Mr. J. S. Barton) accepted this evidence, and said he would not cancel the license, but would reflect it in the fine. SATURDAY NIGHT EPISODE. AUCKLAND, Feb. 27. Robert Joseph Draper, aged 17, was arrested on Saturday night after a motor car he was driving had careered into the safety zone and thence nearly on to the footpath, just missing Mr. J. Mcllveney, inspector of police for the Auckland district. He was charged at the Police Court with converting the ear to his own use, of negligently driving the car, and causing injury to David Thompson, who is now in hospital. He was remanded in eustory to March 5. his counsel saying that Draper suffered from St. Vitus aa.nce. THEFT FROM RAILWAY STATIONPALMERSTON N.. Ibb. 27. D'l.rint? the week-end the office of the A shhurst railway station was broken into and sums of Ids 2d in copper and 9s Gd in silver were taken.
