AMATEUR ATHLETICS.

TARANAKI CHAMPIONSHIPS

(By “Hurdle.”)

Picking winners at a race meeting seems easy in comparison with picking some of the winners at the Taranaki Athletic Sports, to be held at Hawera on Wednesday. There are only three “morals,’’ Viz., S_ Lay (javelin), D. Wills (both walks), and A. E. Gilliver (hop, step, and jump). Over the sticks I think I would fancy 65, but he may be scratched and saved for the 100 yards flat. In that case A. Newell should show up. The 440 hurdles will be a good go, but Hunter (New Plymouth) will do me. In the 100 yards New Plymouth holds a strong hand. The man who I,eats Norris, Ulaek, Gihnour, and Medley, of that club, will be Hying. Hawera’s hopes will be pinned to A. li. Gilliver and S. Shore. _

The cycling championships are a bigger puzzle, that is if pile wants a centainty. In the one-mile cycle Stenliiiig Dykes ;tml Griffin will be close together at the finish, but the one who has trained the hardest is 11. -J. Kelson. Jlis turn will very likely come in the three miles.'" F. Drown may prove the surprise of the" meeting. The SBO yards Hat kioUis good for Gilmour (New Plymouth), with (J . Flaser (Patea) second. Tulfery and Pcnwarden are said to be good* over the one- and three miles run, but my pick is R. Walker. Should he be well he will show everybody a clean pair of heels over the last 50 yards. The smallest and gamesb is G. Hawkins, but this plucky little runner is meeting spme good company, and so will start ns ah outsider.

For the shot L Hunt seems unbeatable, likewise in the hammer and discus. A. Ne-tm'an will be his nearest attendant. The relay race will see New Plymouth provide the favourites. Hajvera High School may be the stumbling block, but I hardly think they can head the black and golds ,off. Officials are expected to be on the grounds not later than G. 15 p.m. The three miles walk will start at 7 p.m Competitors will he well advised to see that they run in their club colours. No piebald colours will do for this meeting. Also see that they are on tlieir marks to as the committee is going to keep to the timetable.
