.MT. COOK, AT WELLINGTON

The Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. J. (i. Coates, has forwarded to the Mayor of Wellington, Mr Troup, a. letter in reference to the site for the National War Memorial, National Museum and National Art Gallery. The: Government has decided to prepare as a site for all these purposes that known as Mount Cook. He understands that bells for the carillion are due to arrive at the latter end of this year, and. that plans have been made' for the erection of a cnnipanill-e to provide also below a hal’ of memories. This can be made the main feature, of the group of buildings for the purposes indicated- above; and the Government is prepared to make the Mt. Cook site available, on the understanding that the campanille is everted in such a position as will not materially interfere with the pi ©sent Defence Department buildings, which remain in use by |he Crown until such time as the money, up to £IOO,OOO. which the Government has agreed to subsidise on a pound for pound basis, has been collected- The Government would then be prepared to vacate the site entirelv and to hand it over to a board of trustees.
