(From O'ur Own Correspondent.) SETTLERS’ AND 1 SCHOOL CiH.t LDR.EN’S PICNIC. For the first time in niany years the local annual picnic was held away from, the district. Many residents- have for some years been desirous of a change and this year saw the fulfillment of their wish. On Friday, the 24th inst., promptly at 9.40 a.m. a happy care free crowd left for Opunakc beach aboard Mr Blair’s lorry, closely followed by many private car loads. The morning was rather overcast, but on arrival at Opunake they were overjoyed to find a fine day awaiting.

An hour’s frolic in the surf was thoroughly enjoyed by young and old, the youngsters, and indeed.the adults also threw themselves with abadon into the fun which is found only in a holiday mood and in suitable environments. The pavilion was reserved for this district and the ladies, in preparing the luncheon found their duties veiy congenial, and the thanks o.f the committee are due to Mr and Mrs Ooad for their valuable help in making the ladies’ task a great deal more pieasant. After lunch a programme of races were gone through and occupied the time until afternoon tea. The list of races, etc., was much smaller than in previous years, the children finding much pleasure in the swing-boats, ocean-waves, and the fascinating lure of the waves.
