DR. C. J. REAKES.
TOUR- OF SOUTH AFRICA. LONDqN, Jan. 10. Dr. C. J. Reakes, Director-General of the Department- of Agriculture, aud Mrs. Reaiies expect to leave by the I'.liemistucles for South Africa next Saturday. Dr. Reakes made, a tour of France, Belgium, Holland and Germany, in all oi which countries he met agricultural authorities' and discussed the subject of stock diseases, paying particular attention to foot-and-mouth disease. Since returning from the Continent he has been in touch with the Ministry of Agriculture, he lias visited a number of veterinary colleges, and he lias been in consultation with the Empire Marketing Board. With Air. R. S. Forsyth (London manager of the New Zealand Ale at Producers’ Board) lie has made several visits to Smitliiield market, and he lias made investigations into the handling and storing of New Zealand dairy produce. This week he lias paid another visit to the plant-breeding station at Aberystwith. Since his arrival in London a few months ago Dr. Reakes has had a wonderful opportunity of examining and studying the development of all branches of agriculture, and he lias been a. very busy man during the whole of his stay. No doubt the Dominion will reap the benefit of Ills experience, but he is not disposed at the present moment to give the general public the benefit of his impressions. He intends to spend six weeks in South Africa, going as far north as Rhodesia, and he will join the Euripides, which leaves South Africa for Australia about the beginning of Alarch.
