In order to complete the list of photographs of Mayors of Hawera, Mr L. A. Bone has forwarded his photograph to be hung with the others in the council chamber. When an order was made against a debtor at the HaAvera Court this morning, one of the solicitors Avas overheard to remark that he had been assaulted at his office yesterday because he had put a man in possession of defendant's house for rent oAvina. B. Beale). The Standard Film Company, of which Lord Beaverbrook is chairman, and Loews Incorporated and United Artists. Incorporated have entered into alliance for the formation of a company for the production of films in Great Britain. The majority of the shares Avill be owned by and the control will be vested in the British group. This announcement folloAvs the publication of the merger of First National Pictures and Path© Freres Cinema, in Avhich the same British group is interested. Another agreement is that betAveen the British Gaumont Company and the German Ufa films for joint action in Europe. Miss J. MacLachlan Avill give an exhibition of Highland dancing at the Scottish social to-night.

In response to n request from the District Highways Council, lithos and descriptions of the main highways through the borough have been forwarded by the council, showing routes and terminations.

Mr. Hugh Baily, of New Plymouth, who is secretary of several dairy factories in that district, was a passenger by train for the isouth this morning. Mr. Baily has just returned from a tour of North Auckland, and did some yachting 'at Bussell. He says the country round Whangarei and district is looking very well, despite the four months’ dry spell. Hearty appreciation was expressed in a letter from the South Taranaki Automobile Association to the Hawera Borough Council for the excellent work done at the motor camp site in the Park reserve.

The matriculation examination will in future bo known as the University Entrance Examination, as scon as the amendment of the Statute receives the forma 1 consent of the Government. This decision was reached yesterday at a meeting®of the University Council. Certain irregularities in the degree examination in contracts were discussed in committee, and it was resolved that candidates who in that examination reached the lowest mark accepted be passed. We should be grateful for its criticism and censorship. The pulpit and the Press bculd form a more supreme alliance in the interests of truth and soberness.”
