FRANCE AND AUSTRALIA. THRILLING DOUBLES MATCH. BY CABLE-rRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. SYDNEY, Feb. 16. The -second series of tennis best matches between France and Australia was commenced in extremely warm, humid weather to-day. The Australians did not appear to the best advantage, except in the doubles match, the finish of which was thrilling, the Australians narrow win arousing intense excitement among the very large attendance. Brugnon defeated Patterson, 4—6, 6 —4, 6 —l. The Australian was brilliant in the first set, his services being severe and his all-round play great, but he fell away and then Brugnon passed him repeatedly. Patterson was sluggish in the final set, his returns being particularly bad. Borotra defeated Crawford, 7 o, 6—l. In the first set the Australian compelled the visitor to display agility. Crawford had a, great chance of success when leading 6 —5, but he failed to finalise it. _ln the -second set Borotra, chopping heavily to Crawford’s backhand, advanced to the net and dominated the game. In the doubles, Crawford and Hopman defeated Borotra and Boussus, 3—6, 7 —5, 10—S. Faulty smashing lost Australia the first set. After a good recovery, Crawford, who .was disappointing in the early stages, improved. Hopman was stylish, and shaped the best- of the quartette. Borotra. towards the end. made a brilliant attempt to save the game, hut the Australians kept the hall awav from him throughout.
