OLD BOYS BEAT PATEA. At Patea, Old Boys prevailed oyer the local team in a small scoring match by a margin of 54 runs. Hayes was the outstanding batsman, playing fine cricket for his score of 54. MIDLAND 1 BEAT KAP ON GA. At Kaponga the local men made a poor showing against Midland and enabled the latter to- get a three point win. None of the scores were large, Kimsella. 28 Giibiin 20 (Midland), and Grace 34 (Kaponga) being the only totals worth mention. McCarthy had a. day out with the ball and secured a remarkable average,, wjhile Fitzgerald, for Kaponga bad the same number for slightly mo-re runs. HAWKE CUP GAME. CHALLENGE UNSUCESSFUL. WANGANUI, Jan. 28. The Hawke Cup match between Waikato (challengers) and Wanganui (holders) was concluded to-day. In the first innings yesterday Wanganui made 361 and the visitors continued this morning with two wickets down for 20 runs. The third wicket fell for five, the fourth for 16 and the fifth for 15, the score being then only 85. The innings closed for 99. With 263 to make to avert an innings defeat, the visitors followed on and made a better showing, the first two wickets putting on 75 for two. but all were out for 153, leaving Wanganui the winners by an innings and 109 runs. Borough replied with 153 for six wickets (Spedding 44 not out and J. Spudding 34). New Plymouth (Kingston 81) are leading by 28 runs from Old Boys (O. Bash 70). SECOND GRADE. NEW PLYMOUTH BEAT WAITARA. A three-point win by an innings and five runs was gained by New Plymouth over Waitara at Tukapo. THIRD GRADE. Western Park (76 and 64) defeated Regimental Band (28 and 77) by 25 runs, thus securing three points. OLD BOYS BEAT METHODISTS. There was some good cricket when another series of games in the senior competition started on Saturday. Parnell made 267 against University, Duncan, an Otago representative of a lew seasonis ago, scoring 100 in fine' style. For University Smeeton took five wickets for 40. Before stumps were drawn University lost two for •12. Mount Eden’s battling against United Suburbs was somewhat slow. Postles was dismissed for 99. Gillespie scored 27 for United Suburbs. Martin took eight wickets for 54 anl this team in the first innings scored 48 for one wicket.
Ponsonby batted well against Grafton. Langridge, the association’s second coach, made 149, Lendrum 55 and F. Taylor 44. Grafton lost one wicket for 27. North Shore scored 214 against Y.M.C.A., Frater contributing 70 and Garrad 39. Y.M.C.A., who had kept a place open for Bowley, were dismissed for 43, Saunders taking seven for 17. ENGLISH TEAM ON TOUR. PLAY IN SOUTH AFRICA. CAPETOWN, Jan. 28. At Johnnesburg the M.C.C. commenced a match against South. Africa. Marylebone in their first innings have lost seven wickets for 233. The weather was fine. Deane won the toss and sent England in on a fast wicket. _ There was a sensation before the game had gone l far, Holmes being beaten by a good ball from Bissett in his second over. .Sutcliffe and Tyldesley played a dotSr defensive game against good; bowling, and at luncheon the score was one for 67. When play was resumed excellent bowling and fielding kept the runs down. Sutcliffe' was obviously surprised at the decision when he was given out leg l>efore, it apnearing rather as if he had hit the ball. The English tail wagged with a vengeance, Peebles defying all attempts to dislodge him. His passive resistance amused the crowd, and with Staples he played out time. SHEFFTELTV SHIELD PLAT. SYDNEY. Jan. 29. Tn the Sheffield Shield cricket match against New South "Wales. Victoria in the first innings made 422. The largest scores were made by Woodfull COT). Hendry (138), "Ryder (106). Scaiffe (35 not out). Bowling: Gregory took four wickets for 81. Nicliolls two for 103 and Mailey three for 12S. The weather was fine and the wicket good. The Victorians batted carefullv against strong bowling and keen fielding. Woodfull played a fine fighting innings and his partnership with Hendry added 192 t'O the score. When
Ryder joined Hendry runs came more freely, Ryder in particular tackling everything sent down. Gregory’s bonding was wonderfully good, being fast and of splendid length throughout. A thunderstorm caused the cessation of play before .New South Wales was able to bat.
