MOTORISTS’ AFFAIRS.
AUTOMOBILE ASSOCIATION MEETING. ALT. EG M'O NT EXCURSION. The monthly' meeting of the South Taranaki Automobile Association was held at Hawera last night, when there were present: Messrs W. O 'Callaghan (chairman), J. H. Duffill, L. O. Hooker, \V. A. Spragg, S. G. Tanks and W. G. Walkley (secretary). Apologies for absence were received from Messrs E. P. Cox, G. J. Bayley and JDrs. J. McGhie and W. AI. Thomson. It was decided on Air Duffill’s motion seconded by Air Hooker, that the secretary write the Hawera Borough Council thanking them for their assistance in the erection of the camp site. There was considerable discussion on the matter of the excursion to Alt. Egniont on Sunday. Air Walkley stated that the Egniont Tourist Motors, the S.O.S. Motors and Air C. E. Einchain were taking 100, £22 and 8 excursionists respectively. It was anticipated that aver 200 would arrive and it was expected that there would be some difficulty experienced in conveying them to the mountain. Air Hooker said that no arrangements had been made in regard to accommodation. It was expected that the Government would arrange this. No offers of private accommodation had been received.
On the motion of Air Tonks it was resolved that th e matter of erecting mile and altitude posts on the mountain track be left in the hands of Alessrs Walkley and Hooker.
There was some discussion on a proposed highway from Eltham to Napier via the Omoana district which m been suggested by tne Eltham ratepayers. Air Hooker considered that representations should be made that the road should be made from Hawera, via the Tongahoe gorge. No definite action was taken. A letter was received from the Wan-o-anui Automobile ‘Association enclosing a copy of one from Air C._ D. Campion complaining of the action of a Hawera lady motorist. It. appears that Mr 'Campion was driving a mob of lortO, head of sheep and was negotiating the’ Montgomery bridge. The lady had, !when asked by the driver, ignored his request to allow the remainder of the sheep to .cross the bridge, but had call ously driven on. The result was that tile drivers had had great difficulty in getting the mob together again. It was pointed out that in the Wanganui district in some cases it was an -offence to cross a bridge when stock was already on it. On the motion of Air O’Callaghan, seconded by Air Spragg, it was decided that the secretary should write the driver of the car with reference to the matter. , T ' The secretary handed round the Inland Automobile Association badge of the American Automobile Association of Washington. He stated that he had sent one of the local badges in return.
