ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
GAS POISONING SUICIDE. (BY TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION.) AUCKLAND, Jan. 27. A verdict of suicide was returned at an inquest on Leslie Garland Pike, a married insurance agent, who was found yesterday afternoon with his head in an oven and the gas turned full on in a flat in Symonds Street. Ilis widow testified that Pike had been ill for a year and only a week ago left, a sanatorium at Rotorua.
FATAL LORRY CRASH.
ROTORUA, Jan. 27
At half-past two this morning, a combination lorry used for mails and passengers, driven by Hughie McPherson. and conveying eighteen natives, was returning from the tangi at Tewhaiti to Ruataliuna, when it went over a bank 300 yards from Tewhaiti. It is assumed that the steering gear failed and the car plunged through ti tree into the river, where it overturned, pinning the occupants underneath. Aid was immediately forthcoming and the victims were extricated and carried to the meeting house, where one was found to be dead and all the others injured, some very seriously. The driver sustained a scalp wound, but was able to render aid. Doctors were infmediatoly called up from Rotorua and are proceeding to the scene. Details and the names of the injured are not available at present.
