PETROL TAX BENEFIT.
SHARE FOR BOROUGHS,
ALTERATION O’F BOUNDARIES
•BY TELEGRAPH—SPECIAL. TO "THE STAR.”) WELLINGTON, Jan. 27. Boundaries of highway districts throughout the Dominion have been altered, according to “Gazette” notice. The reason for changes being to bring the districts into line with a scheme for distribution of the petrol tax receipts. The statute provides for a definite proportion of the revenue to be received by boroughs of over 6000 population and it was made clear by the Government that the smaller local bodies, who have maintained roads which . are essential as links in the main highways, would also- receive consideration. Consequently the new boundaries announced are designed to'include in the adjacent highway districts all boroughs with a smaller population than 6000. The next step is that the Main Highways Board will declare as main highways the continuation of the highway through these borough areas. Under former .system such boroughs have received assistance for maintenance only on the .same basis as the board has subsidised maintenance on adjoining lengths of country main highway, but in future they will be entitled to the same benefits as county councils in respect both of construction and maintenance.
