SCOTTISH SPORTS.
MEETING AT ELTHAM.
SUCCESSFUL CALEDONIAN GATHERING.
Fine sunny weather, tempered by a slight cooling breeze, favoured the opening at Eltham .this, morning of the monster sports gathering under the auspices of: the Taranaki Provincial Scottish Sports Association. From early morning the streets of Eltham were resplendent. with the gay kilts and tartans of various elans supported by competitors in the numerous Scottish dancing and piping events, the whole imparting a festive air to the town. As a matter of fact, to the casual observer it seemed rather a .pity that some people wore compelled to work on such a.' day. This hardship, however, was somewhat modified by the thoughtful consideration of trades people in closing their business, premises an hour earlier than usual on the weekly half-holiday. As predicted, all arrangements for the comfort of the general public had received careful attention, and by 11 a.m., when the crowd commenced to assemble at Taumata Park to view the first event, the joint secretaries (Messrs R. L. Garden and H. Taylor) and their assistants had everything well in train. Festivities on the ground started with the advent of the Eltham, Hawera and New Plymouth Pipe Bands, under Pipe-Majors Crawford, Pickering and Kirkland respectively, who paraded, playing a march in turn around the sports arena. ,
