PLUNKET SHIELD CRICKET.
WELiDING TO'N BEAT OTAGO. TENi WICKETS TO SPABiE. The Plunket Shield match between Wellington and Otago ended in a very decisive win for Wellington. However, Otago though beaten, made a fine fighting finish. 333 runs behind on the first innings seemed a hopeless position and pointed to an innings loss, but struggling hard, Otago ran to 374 before the last wicket fell. Dickinson anti Vonorth for the last wicket both made centuries and saved the innings defeat after the crack batsmen bad failed badly. Wellington got the 42 requited without the loss of a wicket. With eight down for 476, Brice and James were associated, but the former went out to Douglas and was stumped. 477—9—1. Massey came in and. after oleven had been scored, James returned a ball to Douglas and was out alter a great innings of 108. 188—TO—--108. WELLINGTON. First Innings. R. Blunt and Knight opened Otago’s innings, McGirr and Massey howling. Blunt sent the first ball oi McGirr’s opening over to the boundary, and in the next over got 3 and 1 from Massey. Otago’s already drooping spirits fell when Blunt snicked McGirr’s fourth ball in the second over into Foley’s hands at slip, a fine catch. B—l—S. Good backing by McMullan gave Knight the first run, but the newcomer went out caught :in the slips by Brice i before he scored. 9—2—o. Cherry joined Knight, and played carefully. Knight reached double figures with a four off McGirr. With the total at 24 McGirr took Cherry’s wicket with a good length ball. 24—3—1. Cavanagh joined Knight, the latter securing m few singles off both bowlers. Oavanagh was not happy, but 30 went up without further mishap. Foley then j replaced McGirr, who had taken two! wickets for 16. Cavanagb got his first! run after 15 minutes’ batting. Knight was attacking strongly, but bis partner glanced a ball into Massey’s hands. 51—4—6.
Loud cheers greeted Galland’s appearance, who opened well. Sixty came up, and play became brighter. Four from an over-throw brought Gal land’s total to 14, when he returned a ball to Badeoek, tfye bowler. 60— 5 —14. Knight, who was going well, and was very near 50, was joined by Dickinson, and after 75 minutes Knight reached 50. Dickinson playing brightly from the outset, and brought bis score to double figures, and the total to 109. Dowry replaced Badeoek at 106, ami McGirr had replaced Foley a few minutes before. Worker and Dowry both missed Dickinson when he was -in the twenties, and a trio off McGirr brought him to 30. Knight reached 60 after ten singles. Dambert replaced Dowry at 128, and a minute later only a bad return saved Dickinson from being run out. Another brace brought his total to 40, and he reached 50 alter 45 minutes. A four and a single oft Dambert sent 150 up. Massey replaced McGirr, and Brice took the ball from Dambert, being twice no-balled. Dickinson readied 60 by square cutting Massey for 4. Knight was batting steadily, with 68 to his credit. Dickinson gave another chance at 62, but Damason failed to hold a hard catch. After the partnership! had reached IQO Badeoek replaced Brice, and Worker and Damason were also tried with the ball.
Opening on Monday, Dickinson (77 not out) faced the bowling of McGirr. Knight (83 not out) was his partner. The former played McGirr’s first over very carefully but confidently, the northern bowler registering a maiden. From the first- ball of Badeock’s over Otago lost one of her hopes, for Knight patted it softly into the hands of Lambert in the slips. 193—6—83.
Yurrath, the incoming batsman, started shakily, but quickly won applause for two drives to the boundary. As the game progressed the batsmen opened out- Vor.rath sending Badeoek three times in succession to different points of 11 10 boundary. Massey relieved Badeoek, but the men at the crease continued to find good scoring open, ings. Dickinson had a life when Brice dropped a one-handed catch off McGirr. and .shortly afterwards Vorrath skied McGirr just out of Badcock’s reach at point.
In an endeavour to separate the batsmen by a change of bowling Brice replaced Massey, but the batsmen stif slurped confidence; Dickinson reached, the century at 12.30, after batting all told 2 hours 16 minutes After reaching the century he wa' inclined to take risks and, smiting a" a good length ball from Brice, he wa. clean bowled. 290-—7—104.
Elmos, who followed, twined to get bis eye in quickly, but when only five he got his leg before to Dowry, who had taken the ball from McGirr." 295 B—s.
Dmiglas, who was next, opefied well, but utter .scoring six he put- one up from Brice and Lowry .took a .splendid catch. 312—i)—0. Torrance, the last man, opened .streakily, but kept up liis wicket while Vorrath scored freely all round the wicket ami reached his century after playing ]()1 minutes. Shortly afterwards the end came, Torrance being finely c,aught by Badeock altc-i scoring a useful 28. Vorrath was not not li/3, and undoubtedly he and Dickson, with help from Torrance, had -saved the innings defeat.
Wellington had 42 to make to win, ■and Worker and Badeock quickly bii up these runs.
