TARANAKI CHAMPIONSHIPS
GATHERING TO-MORROW
The. cream of Taranaki swimmers will seen in action at the Hawera Public Baths to-morrow afternoon and evening, when the annual provincial championships will be held. This will be the fourth championship gathering promoted by the centre and the second iield in Hawera. Entries have been received in all the senior men’s events included in the New Zealand champion>mp programme, allowing lfne centre to find a full list of champions. This has Been made possible by the addition of the oue-mile free stye and 150 yard® backstroke events, in which no Taranaki championship contest has previously been held- Competitors in both'have been attracted for to-morrow’s gather-
ing. -' h. The afternoon programme will commence at 3 o’clock and ths3 championships will be resumed lat 8 o’clock in the evening. The afternoon events (all championships) will be presented in the •oliowing order:—so yards junior girls’ breaststroke, 440 yards intermediate ■ ooys’ free-style, one mile senior men’s free-style, 220 yards ladies’ free-style, 75 yards intermediate girls’_ breaststroke. boys’ intermediate dive, 880 yards men’s free-style, 440 yards ladies’ free-style, 75 yards junior boys’ breaststroke' 220 yards intermediate girls’ free-style. 150 yards men’s backstroke, 100 yards junior boys’ free-style, 100 vards junior girls’ free-style, 220 yards men’s breaststroke, 220 vards intermediate boys’ free-stye. In the 440 yards intermediate boys ■ham cion ship, H.. Gowan. (Wanganui) •firmed 11 3-ssec. off the existing record. covering the distance in 6min. 1 l-ijsec. , In the 100 yards intermediate girls ’•'.n.moionship, Miss A. Stratton (Wa-—-nui) beat the record by 8 4-ssee. The championship points are now — Canterbury 25. Auckland 12, Otago. 11, Wanganui 5, Wellington 1. ASSOCIATION CONFERENCE. DUNEDIN. Jan. 23. The annual conference of the centres of the N.Z. Amatour wimming Association was held this morning Mr W. isiKip. president of the Dominion Co"nciJ. being in the chair. . The 1929 New Zealand national champion shins were allotted to Wellington, a remit from Canterbury also being carried that the New Zealand championships be held in February instead of January as at present. A remit from Canterbury that a registration fee of l.s per .senior declared member be paid proportionately 50 per "nt. to the council and 50 per cent, to the contributing centre, was lost. A further remit from Hawke’s Bay that eonstration fees be abolished wag .also lost. A motion was carried that thra council suggest to the centres the desirability of arranging deputations to the Prime Minister and Minister of Education, asking them to make swimming .com•julsorv in the schools where facilities exist. . . A suggestion of the council also carried was that' a ladies’ -backstroke event- be included in the national cham--icn-shir* programme.
